Good diet?

Sunny and Skittles both eat the same foods, just different amounts. I was just curious as to how their diet compares to others here. For breakfast they typically have apple, grapes, and banana, with the occasional papaya or berries. Skittles also gets a small amount of a seed mix with his breakfast. For lunch they get fresh carrot, broccoli, cauliflower, corn, and peas. Then for dinner they have cooked brown rice, a cooked vegetable/pasta mix, and corn. Sunny also has access to his seed mix all day. I still consider myself new to being a bird mommy, so I was just hoping for opinions from those more experienced as to if I'm providing them with a good diet. I want to be sure they get everything they need to stay healthy. Thank you!

Benji and Cricket both get a pellet blend(Benji Blend from bird paradise)/seed mix(Volkman's Parrotlet) left all day. They usually eat all the Beak Appetite I give them as well in the AM. Mid day some heavy bread. Sprouts in the evening.

Zoey and Sophie get Ultimate blend from bird paradise or something similar. I like to mix up their foods so they are used to eating different stuff. Two days a week or so I add in Volkman's Eclectus mix too. This is their dry mix thats left out all day. They get Mike's mana mash for breakfast as well. Heavy bread mid day. Sprouts in the evening.

You sound just like me until I realize that Pita eats better than I do...lol

Usually in the morning he gets a scrambled egg with a veggie mash I make (Kale, brocolli, carrots, peppers, apple, ginger root. I grind it up in the processor, and freeze serving sized amounts.) Or the veggie mash mixed with birdie bread. In the afternoon he gets fruit, and for dinner he usually just snacks on his nut/fruit mix .

Sounds what your doing is pretty good. Does he get pellets? And then of course whatever I'm eating he hs a way of getting some of that...LOL

That was a very interesting topic and gave me more ideas what to serve my fids.

May I ask, what is heavy bread?

Parrots are animals that have been removed from everything they instinctually know and go on to live in our world.

Parrots are flock animals; a human being can never replace a bird-companion.

You know, if your fids are eating all that on a regular basis, you're probably subsidizing their diet very effeciently with vitamins, minerals and protien. With the risk of getting thrashed: you may not have to worry about pellets. Most seed mixtures have a small amount of pellets in them anyway that in your case may actually be enough. Of course, I'm no Avain Vet, so I guess asking them is a good idea rather than listening to my opinion.

I applaud your variety attempts.

More ideas: plain pasta (all birds love pasta it seems), maybe some plain oatmeal (maybe with some of that fruit chopped up in it) from time to time (sounds like you've got a lot of time for food prep considering your diverse menu you offer already), cornmeal, scrambled eggs, oranges, honey dew melon, peppers, grapes, peaches.

Sometimes our fids like cereal - chereos, rice crispies, rice chex, wheet chex, raisen bran (light on this as the raisens are sweetened), wheaties, kix, etc.... Of course plain popcorn (we get these tiny ears of corn from the pet store you microwave for about 45 seconds and they pop right on the cob, the fids love 'em), plain rice puffs, etc. I guess most of that qualifies as treats.

Occationally we offer a small piece of white meat chicken (they got turkey this Thanksgiving and will again this XMas).

You know, just make like 5 times as much you do for all your fids, then Drive to Montana and help me give mine that awesome menu you provide. I promise I won't mind. Neither will my fids! :-)

I feed fresh fruits and veggies daily. I provide them in the morning. About twice a week I'll give a boiled egg or scrambled eggs, rice, and/or oats for breakfast. I provide a pellet mixture at all times. Also, a snake mixture is provided min day. For dinner, I'll cook about three times a week. Something like salmon, 15 bean soup mixture, etc. I actually prepare my cooked foods and freeze them in small tuberwares. That way, I can pick and choose what I want to feed and take it out to thaw the night before. I believe that my feds have a well balanced diet, as tehy are provided with everything together or different times throughout the week.
