contaminated well water.

Good article link below on aviaries that had serious bacteria problems here in florida. Something i rarely worried about before moving to the country and living on a well. I am also looking here if anyone has gone thru this. has info on shock cholrination. what labs to use for testing. and the process and info on costs in general...So far my vet has determined that my finches have died from a bacterial infection. But won't know for sure what kind till monday. She needs to grow the culture first.

I'm a bit worried. I'm sorry to say that my finches had become the canary in the mines for my bigger parrots. Although their water comes from the house, while my finch water did come directly from the well without going thru the filtration. all my animals outside are in jeapardy...

any info would be greatly appreciated...

Maybe look into a good reverse osmosis water filtration? And bottled water? Or maybe even boiling water to help clean it some? Sorry don't have much info to help with.

I would recommend bottled water. I know that New Jersey also has some problems with their water supply and have had friends that had to go bottled water to protect their birds.

Yeah, that is what i am going to do. I have to get some distilled. I used to buy it all the time, since city water was awful for my CP's but.... i have 30 animals. i can't buy bottled for them all. I have to fix the problem.

reverse osmosis might help, but i read that article and they installed one and the problem stopped for awhile but then started again.

does anyone live out in the middle of nowhere with a well? can't be just me...grin.

We have RO water for the birds. I can say since I am in trenton and we have had so much problems with flooding in the delaware river, I do not use it, and use bottled water.

I had a well prior, but never had a problem...lucky, I guess.

So sorry about your finches.
Have you tried your county health department or the Florida Department of Agriculture? One or the other should be able to give you info on water testing and what to do about the well.

Thanks lynda, and everyone. i called a few places yesterday not one called me back. But the retail water store in my area said i need to figure out what the bacteria is before i start getting certain tests.

Yes i called DOA/County too. both said they don't water test for private property. And i aske the retail store if this was a common kind of call from well owners and he said no.

If anyone knows about wells i have a HUGE aerator that is supposed to help filter out the sulfer. That rotten egg smell. And from what i learned that the well hit a huge sulfer pocket. Instead of drilling another well somewhere else on the property, with no guarentee of not hitting another pocket they opted for this route. NONE of my neighbors have the problem i do. My buckets are always white with calcium in the paddocks.

Its just such a pain. Not something i want to become expert at. But haven't stopped reading since the vet called. I put the two remaining finches in my other cage new... and brought them in to the garage. If i get the go ahead i'll bring them i the house from now on... I just love those little guys...
