The Healthy Bird Cookbook

150 Recipes for Your Avian Companion by Robin Deutsch is fantastic. Monica previously mentioned it in one of her posts and I am fairly certain that other members have already commented on it. The only issues I have with it are the recipes often call for salt and I am not so sure about adding salt to a bird's diet so I choose to leave it out.

Also, the length of some of the recipes tends not to be too convenient but if you cook a recipe in bulk and freeze the end results, you have meals ready to eat for a while. Still, I usually cook daily for the birds so they have fresh, warm meals. I don't much care for leftovers so I try to cook only what my husband, son and I will eat in one sitting as the frozen leftovers only languish in the freezer for months before being thrown out- a waste!

This morning, I made the kasha with pasta (I used whole wheat penne instead of bowtie.) and I added peas for some extra Vitamin K, especially for our Nanday. The birds enjoyed their fare while I had my Weetabix. I also must add the birds love Weetabix. I eat mine with margarine and jam but the birds have theirs plain.

Best,
Laura

i love that book, and cook quite a bit according to it.... one of the best investments i've ever made. i usually cut the amounts and such in half for each recipe otherwise my freezer would be too small

I too have that book and couldn't agree more.

I've often been tempted to buy it - but haven't yet. Maybe I will buy it for myself for my birthday. (is it sad that you buy things to make your fids happy, for your birthday?! Or am I the only one that does that? LOL)

Bee and Graehstone~ Do you both use the salt in the recipes or omit it? For example, the kasha and pasta called for beef bullion and I also left that out as I didn't have the low sodium kind and even the low sodium bullion has quite a bit of salt in it. What to do?

Stepht25~ I can relate. If it's a toss up between something for me vs. something for the birds, I will buy the birds something as they give me infinite pleasure- more than I get from items solely for my consumption.

i do modify some recipes - for example, minimize the sugar and salt, and add more veggies here and there. so, no - i don't always use the salt that's recommended, and neither the sugar

instead of beef bullion i'd probably use vegetable that i'd set up myself without salt

I just bought the book a couple of days ago and it is awesome! Not only the recipes but also all the info on birds diets and the nutritional content of foods. I am very pleased to have it and can't wait to start cooking!

All the best,

Heather

Thank you, Bee. I am going to try my own veggie broth. Great idea. I did feed the birds some of the leftover kasha and pasta with peas today and I added some grape tomatoes, which seemed to add the zip they desired!
