Greencheek oil gland

I have a greencheek conure that I have had for about 4 years now. I noticed the other day that her oil gland did not have the white tuft of feather like my other greencheeks. I mentioned it to the vet when I was there and they said that maybe she pulled it out. I don't believe that she pulled it out. I think that it maybe blocked or something. That was several weeks ago and it has not grown back. Has anyone ever seen or know anything about this?

Hi. I just checked Rigel's gland feather, and it seems shorter/less poofy than I recall. Perhaps they get worn down as the birds use them, until they molt and get a new one?

they can and do, pull it out. My grey has had that a few times..... When he had preen gland problems, the wick(white tuft of feathers) was there.
I have a site for you, I just have to find it.

Thank you for the web page with the information. It seems to me like maybe it is plugged because the area is not oily-it is dry. That was my first thought when I noticed it. What will happen if it stays blocked for a period of time? I do not know how long it has been that way. She is not fond of me checking out that area of her body. What was wrong with your greys gland?
