Home Depot wood???

I am going to build a play gym and was wondering if I can use any kind of untreated wood from Home Depot? Is there something I should stay away from or look for?
Also to hold a few things together can I use screws? Any special type? Can I put some type of a filler or something over the heads of the screws that will make them so she can not get at them or should I do something different?

Thanks

well.. yes you can use wood from home depot. just make sure its untreated. i have used pine and maple.

as for the screw. i would say yes. you can use them. i just make sure i screw them in about 1/4 inch extra into the wood. and make sure the end of the screw is not going through the wood. so the sharp end is out in the open.

hope this helps~!

We usually go to Lowes, they have the round table tops- pine that we get the screw in legs and dowles to make the perches and treat cup holders- this is what we make, home depot doesnt have the round table tops or the wide variety of legs and sizes, could just be our location- I use the extra seed cup holders from cages to hold treat cups.

I thought about making a play stand out of cleaned PVC pipe. Does anyone think that this would be okay?

I would like to add wood dowls to this as well, to change it up.

What kind of bird?

To hold stuff together you could use non-toxic glue like Elmers. You know, the kind that is safe for children to eat, LOL. That would not hold up to big birds, though.

There isn't a safe filler to use to hide the hardware. And filler won't fool them anyway. It will still look different than the wood and so they will pick at it. You could cover the hardware with rope or vet wrap.

If you leave the hardware exposed, use stainless steel hardware only. Other hardware would be toxic, and birds are attracted to shiny things.

Hold up here.

PVC is dangerous to PEOPLE. I would not make anything for my girl out of PVC.

Do a search online for PVC saftey for people and avians.
