Caique question

Hello all,
I'm pet sitting a Caique and noticed today when she was out on her cage playing, that she was hanging upide down and chewing on parts of the cage. Then I she just seemed to freeze and was kind of quivering all over, her eyes were partially shut and she seemed spaced out. This went on for about a minute. I thought at first she was excited and maybe masterbating, like I've seen males birds do sometime but her nonresponsiveness made me think she might have had a seizure. Her diet consists of a seed mix and nutriberries only, the owner said she only likes carrots and thats it, but she was out of them. Since I've been sitting her for the past 3 days I've been giving her fresh fruits and veggies and she has been eating them. Any suggestions, is this normal caique behavior?

i'm not sure about her "seizure type incident" however, i would definetly mention it to her owner and it doesn't sound like she's on a very good diet for a caique either! i'm glad you're giving her fresh fruits and veggies! there is a caique section on this forum, maybe you can direct your friend to it to get more information on keeping a caique as a pet. and most importantly you might suggest she takes the caique to a vet for a check up! good luck.

I second the check up. That doesn't sound right. It is possible that she saw something out the window that made her go into 'freeze mode' however when mine do that, they also make a low growling type noise as well.

Thanks for the responses. She does this everyday and this time I interupted her while she was zoned out, hanging upside with part of the cage door in her beaking, with full shakes. I don't think it was a seizure because she snapped right out of what she was doing and wasn't very happy with me
