E-Collars

Rusty is now in an e-collar so he won't pick open his injured toenail.

He really hates it, and I have compensated by putting in large, open food/water bowls and keeping him on the bottom as I am terrified he'd trip and fall over, injuring himself more. (the vet ER said that was not necessary, but having seen Rusty trundle around so awkwardly, it's better that I do keep him "grounded".)

What else can I do to best safeguard his recovery?

Thx!

Zeke learned to get around fine in his collar when he cut his toe really bad. The first day he was a little unsure but quickly learned to manuver with it. His toe was almost cut off on a bird toy that should not have been a bird toy.

Thx for sharing your story!

Rusty has gotten used to his, though he is preferring to stay on the ground level. He's figured out eating and drinking, and the toe is fine... I am still unsure what caused his injury, though behind his food dish was a toy made from grape vine material. There was no sign of blood or anything on it, but none of the other toys had crevasses that might allow a toenail to get stuck.

Monday is the vet follow-up; no doubt things will go fine - will be nice to know when I can remove his collar. He still hates it...

If an E-Collar is an issue, you could always look into either an Avian Collar or a Tube Collar

These usually tend to be better, so long as the bird can't reach it's foot... but in truth I don't really know how affective these would be.... some birds are flexible enough that in either type they could still reach their foot... maybe ask your vet about them?

My Chaucer is currently wearing a Avian Collar, and they're great. The only problem is that they can still get to their feet, so if keeping your bird from his toes is the thing....don't use it. Chaucer has been picking under his wings, so it's great for him. Good thing because he really hated the e-collar. However, I noticed last night that he has started picking at his feet and lower legs, so I'll have to do as my vet said I might, and add a e-collar that will sit just under the Avian collar. That will keep him from chewing around the nect of the e-collar. You might check with your vet and see if a combination of the two is what you'll need. Chaucer chewed around the nect of his e-collar so bad that it kept scrapping his neck. Everyday I padded and taped his e-collar....but it got tiresome.

SOLD ONLY TO VETERINARIANS: Private bird owners must have authorization provided by a veterinary hospital in advance of an order.

as is should be so people dont put wrong sizes on their birds and choke them.
