Quarntine question

Today I went to a garage sale and saw two cockatiels for sale. They were in a filthy cage, but seemed very content. I could not resist. I bought them. They were in a garage and it was kinda cold here in Mn. I just wanted to get them home. My question is: Seeing that they were the only birds in there home, for a total for of 1 yr. do I still need to quartine them for 30 days before introducing them to my other fids?

Yes, reason: Some birds can be carriers for certain disease and never show it in their entire lives but in certain cases of stress (like rehoming) the disease can then present itself. Its best if you have other birds for their safety. It is a difficult time period but if your serious about the care of your pets you can find a way to get it done. I put new birdies in my master bathroom under a skylight at the opposite end of the house. Its crowded for us but at least this way they also get daily interaction from us. And wash after caring for them or handling.

Thank You for your response. I will take all precautions. They seem to be very sweet. They are both males, and one of them says pretty bird. The people that owned them did not have them named. I think I will call them Zach and Zeek. Thank You again Kari

I am of the oppinion... ask your vet after their first checkup. Just moving to a new home can cause stress, and open up their immune systems to an infection. It happens a LOT.

On the other hand...

Congrats!

Congrats! Sadly, I've gotten birds from similar situations!

If both are males, then I'd say that the yellow one looks to possibly be a pearl pied! They sure look healthy! Hope you can get them on a good diet and all is well with them!

Aren't they adorable! It seems as if you were in the right place at the right time as far as those two 'tiels are concerned!

I'm of the opinion that better safe than sorry in regards to bringing a new animal into your home. I had an outbreak of mites once after introducing a new hedgehog into my home several years ago, so I definitely learned my lesson. I personally feel that 30 days is too short, unless you are given an OK from the vet (e.g. bloodwork indicates that it is safe). I personally would err on the side of caution and go for at least 6 weeks... but that's just me.

Best wishes to the two new members to your flock,

-e-

Quarantine times vary depending on who you ask... some say 30 days... some say 60... some say 90... because an illness can stay dormant for 30 days before even showing any signs... some may be dormant for even longer and you may never know of them until the bird comes down with the illness, or another bird gets sick...
