Question Would this work for an aviary?

Well, I have finally decided to take the plunge and build an aviary for my tiels. I know what I want it to look like and I am thinking 3x8x6 for the 7 of them should be ok, right? That wasn't my question but since I'm here...

My question is about the wire. The hardware store by my house has wire mesh that is the right size with 1"x2" mesh, 14 guage but all it says is that it is welded steel and can be used for rabbit cages, pet cages, etc. It doesn't say stainless steel or galvanized at all. Would this be ok to use? I used the same wire years ago when I had rabbits but they didn't chew on the wire (at least not that I know of).

Most likely the wire is galvanized. If not and not stainless, it will rust. Have you seen the plastic coated wire? It would work well for tiels. wingzcatalog.com carries it.

Question

Thanks. I was wondering about using vinyl fencing (like snow fence only black) instead. Would that work? Or vinyl coated wire mesh? Or if I used regular wire mesh but then painted it with bird safe paint? The problem is I need to build one tomorrow for some baby robins I am raising and it doesn't matter what kind of wire I use for them but I would like to use it for the tiels after they are gone. I would like to get the whole thing done without having to re-wire it if possible but that leaves me limited to what I can buy at the hardware store. They are not going to be living in it all the time, just outside for a few hours on nice days but I still want to make sure it will be ok.

1"x2" mesh is too big for tiels because they can get their head or wing stuck in it.
