Octagonal Cage

He everyone. Any thoughts on an octagonal cage? I am looking at one for a CAG. I like the cage a lot and I would be getting it at a very good price. The problem is that I have heard cages without corners can be problematic for some birds. One post on a different forum told me the problem was with the design of some round cages and a weakness that allowed birds to get their heads between bars and then caught. I liked her response because it supported me getting the cage I want and this would not be a problem with this cage (A&E Cage) but I am concerned that there are no true 90 degree corners that some articles suggest a bird needs for security. I'm not finding too much on this topic out on the Internet. I'd love any advice anyone might like to give.

I have heard problems about round cages and the lack fo security too. I would think an octagon cage would be a bit different from a true round cage. Could you set the cage up so that one side near the back would be close to a plant of something? That way there would be an area of the cage would would feel "protected".

LMAO how many square trees have you seen in your life?

There is nothing wrong with a round or semi round cage as long as its big enough for your bird and the bar spacing is the right size.

LMAO get the cage and let your bird enjoy it.

I'm sure there will be alot of different opinions but no definite answer. If you continue to have doubts I'm sure if you shop around you'll find a good deal on a square cage. To be safe just get that. That's what I'd do personally rather than be bothered by wondering whether I did the right thing or not.

I do have a book that mentions not to put birds in spherical shaped cages because it would be confusing for them. Who knows, maybe weird shaped cages can bother birds. There's just not that much study done in alot of areas of bird ownership and alot we don't know.

ROTFLMAO just because its in a book doesnt mean that the author has a clue about birds it just means that they can copy and paste.

this is getting good lol

The only concern I've ever heard about "cylindrical cage" designs are that there are no "corners" for the birds to "cuddle" into when they're feeling frightened or discomfort. Our grey is kinda shy and timid and likes to "get away" when he's uncomfortable with people or a situation. The far corner of hIS cage (that's by two walls) seems to provide him with a sense of safety and security away from reach or harm when he feels like he needs it.

Besides that I haven't "heard" of anything else.

Personally, I actually don't like cylindrical cages as I think you run into some situations when you want to place perches in the cage where every perch must "cross" under the ones above it which can lead to some "messy" perches that need constant cleaning. Also I don't like some of the challenges that I forsee in my mind with placing some of the toys I want to get my Grey into the cage. Also a square cage design has a larger living space (it's a simple matter of basic mathmatics) than round ones that are of the same height, width and length. Anyhow, those are the reasons I tend to avoid cages like that.

But, I'm not telling you not to get one. If it's got a lot of living space and it's what you want for your Grey... then I say get one!

Its NOT ROUND (Oopps, shh. Im shouting) Its OCtagon. O C T A G O N> Have you not seen one? Perches CAN go straight across. There are Eight sides and EIGHT corners. You can put in things to hide by. I would like one. They are huge - the ones Ive seen and the one feature I liked the best was the Huge door.

the only real problem ive seen with some of the older round cages is that some of the smaller birds can squeeze themselves out of the bars at the top, but most of the newer cages dont have too-wide bar spacing and they are actually quite nice and decorative looking.

as for the security of the corners, thats only for some birds. i know for a fact mine wouldnt mind not having the corners cause mine have been with me since they were babies and are very comfortable, but thats not always the case with other people's birds. you can always arrange the inside of the cage to give your bird some safe, secure place to hide if it ever gets nervous or scared, doesnt have to be in the corner of the cage, maybe some type of happy hut thing or something....

anywho, its up to you, if you really want the cage, i dont really see a problem with the corner-less cage. if you do buy it, check out their return policies, or ask them if your bird hates the cage if you can return it or exchange it for another cage.
