Drafts

How much concern are drafts to parrots?

My apartment's temperature is often 80+ degrees, when the outside is 40~80 before I turn on the AC.

If I kept the birds' cages in a corner, in the same room but away from the window, would that help?

My birds don't mind "drafts" because they were bred and raised in an outdoor aviary. It gets very hot in texas so I have to have the air on. I just don't put the cage right under it. In the fall and spring I will open the window and they seem to like it. I guess it's something some people tend to frown upon but mine are fine. However, I use an ionic air filter also so that may help a bit.

Ionic air cleaners are dangerous to birds....

So long as there is no abrupt change of temperature, drafts should not be a problem to birds. Being the summer, my house is currently going through temps between 64-81° F, with some rooms warmer or colder than others. By 9-10am it's usually between 75-82° and with the swamp cooler it gets to 64-68° during the day, unless I turn it to fan, only, in which case it goes back up to 77-82° within less than 2 hours... it hasn't seemed to bother any of the birds, but then again the ones who feel most of the coolness would be the ones in my room.... a mitred, a bourke, and a starling.

Can you show me any documentation on that Monica? The lady that I bought my birds from recommended it to me.

Nevermind, I found this. Seems it's only bad if it produces lots of ozone. Mine doesn't so it should be find.

Amanda, if you have an ionic/ionizer air cleaner, then it needs a way for that feature to be turned off.... it's unhealthy for birds AND humans alike. If there is no way to turn the ionizer feature off, you need a new air cleaner/purifier.

I suggest you read this thread....
