Thumbs up I've been through most of this before

I friend of mine had a cherry head conure who got it's leg broken in his aviary The vet reset it and he took him to apt.s weekly to bi-weekly. One of his apts, the vet said if he didn't start using it they wanted to amputate it. That same day he had to bring Ducky(the conure) to work and I let him out of his cage. Ducky was nice to me so he asked me to take him, I did. Then I gradually stopped the medicaine he was on and first the leg was never used but each week he used it more and more. He still can't pick up food with it but he can scratch his head and use it as a crutch. I stopped his vet apts when I got him because I didn't want them to take his leg. If your sun survives the bite(internally) he will be just fine. Don't give up on him.:)

Im so Sorry

I will be praying for your baby and you. I have had dogs, cats and birds for many years and to date only 1 has been injured. I felt so bad. I thought that she was safe and my cat was mad at her for some reason and jumped up and took her right off my shoulder. She bruised her but that was enough for me. I had not had any trouble from this cat ever before but she is a bell wearer now. My birds are in a cat/dog free room most of the time but now When I have any of the birds out the dogs are outside and the cats are in another room. I think dogs can't tell is they are a squeek toy or not.

I had the same experience.
My sister wasn't paying attention (she was on the phone) and let my dog Tucker into the room. Tucker immediately went for Tiko. My sister screamed so Tucker dropped Tiko.
Tiko broke his leg, so we rushed him to the nearest vet where he spent the night. The next day he was sedated and X-rays were taken (which was scary because of his small size).
I was really scared because they were all like "he might lose his leg, because the break is close to his thigh" and just plain scary things that might happen.
So we went to Dr. Jeffery Jenkins in San Diego. He is a bird specialist, he is THE BEST bird vet on the west coast! We had to wait a while because he was working us into his busy schedule... so he looked at the X-rays and then decided to splint Tiko's leg. So me and my mom hung out at the beach waiting for the call to come pick Tiko up. About two hours later Tiko was ready to come home :)
We had to take him back every week to get him checked out, but that wasn't so bad.
Oh, and e couldn't live in a caged while he was splinted, so we got him a big rubbermaid box and put a towel and his bird tent inside (along with his food and water).
He really hated it because he's a climber, but we had to do it. we didn't want to risk him re-hurting his leg.
The whole thing took about five-six weeks.
And NOW he his more active then ever!
He took some re training because he was a little skiddish after that, but now (2 months later) he is back to his normal self.

:)

I know how hard it is and what your going through.
But Just pray and find the best vet possible and I'm sure your baby will be okay =/

Thank you everyone who replied. My baby is home now and he has no internal injuries. His leg is broken but luckily it was only in one place. My vet thinks he will make a full recovery. He is still in pain and is on 2 medications for the next ten days and then he will need to be rechecked (xrayed and physical).
The whole experience was terrifying...

Hurrah!!

Leiarose,

I'm so relieved to hear that your little sun conure will make a full recovery. Thank you so much for keeping us informed!

I have 18 parrots, all adoptees except for the first one who was bought as a pet. I also have a small dog. At any one time in my house somebirdy will be allowed outside of his/her cage, so I am always on guard. My little dog is good as gold but I put her in a small kennel when I must go outside or do something that will not allow me to watch her closely. Since my birds are an odd assortment from a large Amazon to a tiny Green-Cheeked Conure I must also watch to make sure there's no aggression issues between them. I find that the cockatiels are the most vulnerable in my flock. They are delicate, gentle, creatures. I put them out in my aviary with the gentle giants, the 3 Patagonian Conures I have. So the largest of my Conures, oddly enough, are the safest for the meekest of my flock! Of course, I sit outside with them. (I never leave any bird unattended in the aviary. During this time, of course, the rest of the birds are locked safely inside their own cages.)

My own Sun Conure, Jerry, is actually a Sun/Jenday Hybrid. His favorite thing to do is scream, scream, scream. He is quite a character, though, and the most beautiful of the flock. At least, that's what everyone else seems to think.

I wish you a heartfelt best for your little Sun and hope he/she mends quickly!

Cheers, Cindi.

Poor baby. I'm glad he's home with his mommy. Things will be just fine now.... what a horrible scare for you.
All the best,
