Exclamation Broken Leg

Hi guys,

My Sun Conure was bitten by a dog tonight and the dog broke his little leg! I immediately rushed my baby to the vet and they are keeping him overnight. The vet said he is too small for surgery to put a pin in place and that they will try and splint it and do xrays to insure there is no internal injuries. They need to sedate him for the xrays. Im worried about him and wanted to know if anyone has expereince with this and how he will heal.

Breaks are scary but they heal. The bite is the thing to worry about. Your Sun must be on antibiotics.

why was the bird out when the dog was around? they should never be unsupervised.the bird should be kept safe in the cage when the dog is loose and dog kept in another room away from the bird when the bird is out, poor bird I hope he makes it without to much trouble, but please take more care next time its your responsibility to keep them both safe and you see that they can't be in the same area

Hi Leiarose,
so sorry to hear of this. let's pray there are no internal injuries! breaks do heal. i have never experienced this unfortunate accident before. and hope i never have too. no matter how the break came about...
just wait for your vet to give you advice. it's a scary thing i know. but wait till you hear all what your vet has too say.he/she will give the best advice...
i know your scared. but try to stay as calm as you can. it's in good hands right now!
keep us posted on how your bird is doing. good luck, take care

If the skin was broken, it is sometimes fatal for a bird to be bitten by a dog or cat. You should take it to a vet immediately----------

is anyone listening? the bird was taken to the vet. all animals react differently when put under, but i've never heard of a bird dying while being put under. a friend of mine's dog died while put under due to an allergic reaction, but exotic pet vets ALWAYS take extra precaution when ever handling parrots or any bird for that matter. everything will be fine the bird will probably have a little gimp but it adds character. good luck.

Broken leg

Hi: Yes, I have had a few baby parrots break their legs before being pulled from the nest. Most probably something happens during the first few days of life as some are very small. I can especially remember a parrotlet baby that was fitted with a pink leg cast (color was appropriate since it was a female). It was very cute when she started fledging because she would fly around the room with her little leg cast in pink. I do not know if my vet (Dr. Dahlhausen 513-576-1990) anesthetized her to do this. You can call them and ask his vet tech if this is safe or not. I always keep in mind that any time anesthetic is used you take a chance so it is good that you are asking questions first....Deb

Broken Leg

I had a parrotlet with a broken leg, so I know what you are going through. The vet will take x-rays, wrap the leg up with tape and put a collar on the bird so he won't chew the tape off. My husband stepped on my bird's leg when he was hiding next to my dog to get away from my kids. I was at work at the time.

no huh? I can give you a list of people.

through the years, it has become safer to put birds under anethesia. However, you want to know what kind they are using and how. I have watched some be put out in some very scarey ways, and others have full surgical teams and nurses just to watch the breathing on birds that are under.
there is no guarentee and usually a consent form is signed releasing the Dr's from liability if the bird does pass on. I have signed SEVERAL myself.

Greys tend to be the most sensitive to the anethesia and I know several that have passed on under anethesia.
Hopefully as avian medicine advances, we will find out what they safest way and kind to use to make sure its a safe proceedure.

good luck with your little one. Breaks usually tend to heal good if treated.
