Exclamation Tail feathers plucked or pulled out

My lutino lovebird, which is a 1 yr old male has a problem.Ive only had him since last friday but I got him with an exsiting problem with his tail.I thought maybe he has some broken blood feathers that he continues to dig at.There is alot of his feathers missing from his tail.I was wondering if they were pulled out or plucked would they itch with new ones coming in,I noticed today he kept digging and shaking his tail so now I think there is more to the problem.I will be taking him to be looked at but I was wondering if someone might know right of hand what I might be dealing with and does new feathers make them itch?

The new feathers "will" make him itch. You may try and mist him lightly with a spray bottle. There is also an aloe vera spray they make for birds that soothes their skin during molting. I am sorry to hear that the person you got him from will not answer your calls. That is just crappy. Its hard to say if your bird plucked them or what happened.

As long as he isn't like, bleeding it's probably okay...When I was in college my parents ignored the fact that my parakeet was in distress, and when he started bleeding from digging at his tail they decided to wait for me to come home for the summer instead of taking him to the vet. By the time I got home he had this huge...scab on his behind. :/ I took him to the vet and he turned out to have an ingrown tailfeather that had caused him so much discomfort he tried to chew it out. He didn't make it through the summer, I think he was weakened by the ordeal.

So if your bird DOES start bleeding take him to the vet! ;)
