are 'bird protector' disks necessary?

Is a product like this necessary?

Protect your birds from lice and mites for months, a common problem found in bird cages. Deodorizes cage as it protects. .5 oz.

does everyone use something like this?
When I see my little guys scratching it makes me nervous
even though birds do that everyday and it doesn't mean they have mites

No, because truth be honest it can cause more harm than good... I've heard that it can cause respiratory problems in birds... thus, it is NOT safe to use.

If a bird has mites, your best bet is to go directly to a vet.

Ivermectin spot-on drops are far better and safer than disks.

Sadly, they put a lot on the market that's worthless, even dangerous.... yet, they still market it for your pets!
