Which cage to use?

I have 2 cages that I can choose from for Eyva, my 4 1/2 month old CAG. The one I have had her in is wrought iron and the dimensions are 35" wide, 44" Tall, 24" deep bar spacing of 1 1/4" and has a playtop. I brought the dropping pan up half way so that when she fell she didnt have as far to drop. The other cage is 30" Wide, 33 1/2" tall and 18" deep with bar spacing of 1/2". I spent the day today hanging it from the ceiling lol it has very lightweight bars.
My concern is the spacing of the bars. It seems like this cage I just moved her to her beak might get caught or even a leg go thru and not get back... the wrought iron cage on the other hand is just big enough for her to stick her head thru if she really tries.
Which cage do u think would be better?

Personally, I don't think it's a good idea to hang cages from ceilings... and I'd say the bigger cage would be better, although I don't know if more than 1" bar spacing would be an issue for a grey... ideally, she shouldn't be sticking her head through the cages bars at all.

Perhaps a new cage? Maybe sell the two and get one new one?

ok I moved her back to the wrought iron cage, the fear of her getting her beak between the bars of the other cage and breaking it were really starting to wear my nerves. She can barely squeeze her head between the bars and has to really force it, she hasnt even tried that in a week or so but I have been afraid to leave her home alone because of that. Since she is still so young, will she continue to grow a little more?

I have Kali in a cage with 1" bar spacing, and that seems about right for a Grey, though smaller is fine too if the bars are the right strength. If your bird has tried to squeeze her head through the bars, you really do need another cage since she can injure herself or worse if she does manage to get her head through. I started Kali out in a 24x36 cage because that's what I read was recommended for Greys. Well, he's an active bird and really needed a bigger cage with playtop. So his cage now is 34x48.

Thanks for the info.
My husband came up with a pretty spiffy idea to make the wrought iron cage safe when I am gone. Go to lowes and buy some Plexiglas, drill holes all over it for air ventilation and put them on the inside of the cage, anchoring them with zip ties or my idea, nuts, bolts and washers. I think that would ease my mind until she got a little bigger or I could afford a different cage. And I can get lowes to cut the plexiglass to fit, or even go to a glass shop and have them do the plexiglass for me.

Hmmm, Plexiglass is expensive. By the time you get done you may have spent just as much as a new cage - and with a grey you will have it covered in his dust in no time and its not very good for his breathing even with holes in it as greys produce so much powder down dust. Have you been watching Craigslist for a good used cage?? Keeps your eyes open for good deals. I have a brand new (didnt have a mark on it) HQ double Macaw cage I got on CL for $200!!. If your bird has managed to force his head thru its not safe. Can you post pics of the other cage?

I don't know how far you are willing to travel, nor how much you are willing to pay, but I did find some cages in Texas for sale... you would probably have to ask about more info on bar spacing.

See if you can get to a bird expo-- usually you will find great bargains on cages.

I sold a budgie to someone who had a large cage, and the bar spacing was too far to be safe for a budgie. They bought some stainless wire like they use for aviaries and put that all inside of the cage and made it safe. It was an inexpensive solution.

plexiglass will also heat up like an oven if in the sun.
1 inch max for the bar spacing with the grey, and I wouldnt hang her from the ceiling either. Greys dont like constant moving. they need to be secure.

This is the cage I am planning on getting for her, do you think it is big enough? I will have to have 2 cages, 1 for the house and 1 for the shop, she goes back and forth with me everyday. ( shop = dog grooming shop)
