Fluttered into Toilet

My husband and I just trimmed our little black capped conure's talons and I think we may have trimmed a bit too much. While he did not get hurt in the process, he has been having a hard time holding on to us.

Today, he was riding my shoulder as I went into the bathroom to wash my hands and as I bent over the sink, he fluttered off.... and landed in the toilet! While the toilet had been flushed, I hardly think of it as a clean place

I immediately nabbed him out and tried to coax him into having a bath (which he usually loves), but he was being a bit stubborn. So I doused him a bit under the sink faucet (to which he doesn't have too many complaints). I still don't see that as being really cleaned enough...

...is there anything else I should do?

Thanks!
-Michie3

honestly - i'd rinse him off really, really good with clean water and call it a day. wouldn't know what else would make sense... unless you have chemicals in your toilet.

Hmmm... there shouldn't be any chemicals in it... I still feel really bad though! Poor little guy. I guess I'll just have to keep an extra eye on him...

-As a side note: I love your little green cheek gif.! :)

He'll be fine. Toilets that are cleaned weekly and flushed after every poo aren't that dirty. Urine by itself is sterile. Poo can contain e-coli in large amounts unsafe for ingestion.

Just soak down all his feathers with water until he is dripping with a miserable expression on his face. You shouldn't need any chemicals. The kitchen sink is usually more dirty than your toilet.

If you're really nervous, weigh him every morning before he eats and after his first poo. So long as that stays consistent, he's more than likely just fine. :)

I had the same thing happen with Cookie last week.. The toilet had been flushed too... I just turned on the shower and held him under it (to which he complained A LOT, but he hates it under the sink even more..) and he was fine - a bit scared for a few minutes, but fine! :)

Oooo I almost had an incident like this with the conure. I ended up placing my hand so he wouldnt land directly in the toilet. He kind of crash landed on the floor but it scared me enough to have all the toilet lids CLOSED from now on, ALWAYS!

Hi Michelle, Hi Pei Chi!

Don't worry, it's happened to me..... Unless someone is using it, the seat is always down now. It's down before we even flush LOL

If you've rinsed him off well all is OK. Their nails are always like that the first few days after a clip. It won't be long before he's hanging on like a monkey again.

Wawa says 'Meeeuuuuuiiiet!' (aka 'Hi!'), right back to Pei Chi. LOL

I think you are right about cutting nails too short. My vet mentioned that most people cut them too short and that they would be a bit longer in the wild. On the other hand, I know birds can get toes and nails caught in fabric and toys so that can be dangerous, too.

We have a rule in my house - no open toilets ever. But, the water should be fine and the bird is probably okay. You rinsed him and so I am sure everything is okay.

I am glad you posted though because I have heard of very tragic drowning accidents and accidental flushings...scary!!!

He will be just fine. If there was poop in it that is a different story. Basically the toilet is pretty clean but we all think of it as being gross but as long at it had to mold growing in and it’s clean you will be fine. Mold is toxic, that is why I clean it every week and scrub it down.

Poor little guy but Im glad he is okay and not too traumatized by it.
