Unscented Candles Safe?

Hi,

i like to light candles every once in a while, and so i was wondering if unscented candles made out of a 100% beeswax and with a pure cotton wick (without any metal weights) are safe to use in our homes. i would be lighting these candles well away from our Jenday: the candles would be on the first floor, and he would be in a bedroom on the second floor with the door closed. i would imagine this would be safe for the most part. and, the only other issue i can think of is the soot that would produced from the burning of the candles, which would probably be an irritant to avian lungs. well, again, he would be very far away from the candles, so i'm wondering if they would really pose any risk.

any insight would be much appreciated :).

You know I don’t think I would chance it. Lets see what other people have to say but I would just be to scared. Personally I would not light it. However you can get natural cinnamon potpourri. It’s natural and safe! You can also make your own with cinnamon sticks.

i think you misunderstood what i wrote: i was talking about UNSCENTED candles for the ambient light, and NOT for fragrance. but, thanks for the tip about the homemade natural cinnamon potpourri: i'm going have to make some :).

I have heard those are the only acceptable candles to use around birds. I have also heard they actually burn clean.

Make sure you damp the wick properly so it does not smoke when you put it out and you will be fine.

My biggest worry, in our confined area, is that Wawa would stick his beak in there! He really would ya know! LOL

I use that kind of home made potpourri for scent as well.... P.S. They can also chew on cinnamon sticks! It's good for them, so I get cinnamon sticks from the health food store give the birds one each and throw one in a pot on low with lots of water, and let is gently steam for 1/2 hour.

According to gbird on this Can someone explain something for me? thread, candle wicks can contain lead... Not good for birds when burned...

Candles are safe as long as the bird does not get near the flame or knock it over and start a fire.

That would be the all cotton... which should be fine. Especially since your fid is on another level of the house. The 'natural' candles with the cotton wick and beeswax I've read here are OK to use. I guess you don't have to worry about your fid zooming into it, either, since it would be upstairs behind a closed door!

Our vet for the rescue said that soy and beeswax candles are safe, as long as the wick is cotton. Both types burn "clean".

I think you would be safe...enjoy your candle light.

actually, from what i understand, most candles emit toxic fumes which are poisonous to our birds. the wax in most candles are toxic when burned. the wick often has lead or other heavy metals, which again emit toxins when burned. soot is produced with most candles. and, scented candles of course release highly toxic fumes. so, i've learned that the only safe options are unscented 100% beeswax candles with pure cotton wicks (that don't have any metal weights/cores).
