Is Psittacosis really dangerous?

I know this is probably a no brainer, but I rehomed Ayita, and his new owner said that he has Psittacosis. He was the only one of my guys that hadn't been to the vet and Drake and Skyy came out clean. I will be getting everyone retested, just trying to figure out how much time I have before it becomes a problem. And what should I do about disinfecting the cages? I am sure a complete scrub down is in order. Please let me know, is this fatal to birds if left untreated for too long?

They are both very contagious, all your fids will have to be treated. The only way to quarantine is in a house that has segregated/separate air supplies in different rooms. At least there are medications that can save them all if you catch it fast enough.

The second is extremely bad.... extremely bad.

OK, well what about sanitizing? Should i make sure to just hit all cages, playstands, and carriers? or should I go as far as sanitizing the air/room? And while they are being treated, is there a chance they could get reinfected? I'm not sure how it is transmitted.

I don't think someone is reading the links.....

Pathophysiology
The primary route for infection is through the respiratory system. Infection develops after organisms from aerosolized dried avian excreta or respiratory secretions from sick birds are inhaled. C psittaci attaches to the respiratory epithelial cells. After the initial inoculation, the organism spreads via the blood stream to the reticuloendothelial system. Subsequently, secondary bacteremia causes lung infection.

Humans may acquire disease by handling sick birds. Mouth-to-beak resuscitation has also been implicated in transmission. Transient exposure to infected birds may cause symptomatic infection, even in visitors to pet shops.

Get them to a vet ASAP and confirm the tests. Tomorrow morning. Emergency visit. Maybe ask if the new owner could have his vet fax the text results to your vet for comparison.

Psittacosis can be treated, but it is deadly when not treated. It can also transfer to humans, where it can also be deadly and is often not diagnosed properly.

Vet. Now. Seriously!
