Angry Skunk

So Chucky got sprayed by a skunk and our whole house smells like Skunk. Iam worried that it is going to hurt Spike and my other birds :( Will the chemicals in skunk spray hurt my birds? The air smells toxic and Iam worried about my birds breathing it in. Skunk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Can anything stick to their feathers and make them sick when they preen :( The skunk sprayed right out front our back door :( And the best part is Chuck has to come in side to go upstairs and have a bath I will be having sweet smelling dreams tonight Should I put cage covers on tonight or will that make it worse for my birds

I don't know. Have you been able to check with an avian vet?

One time we had a skunk spray in our crawl space, where our furnace was. when the heat kicked on, the smell was overwhelming....We all smelled for days! I didnt have problems with the birds..I had canaries, teils and conures at the time....

Thanks :) It smells horrible in here. My Dad keeps opening the door near where the skunk sprayed Iam glad your birds are ok, canaries are really sensitive so if they were alright a budgie, tiel and a linnie should be ok. I might call a vet tommorow but it is too late here to call anywhere. How long did the smell in your house last for? The dog Chucky (my uncles dog) will be going to the groomers tommorow to get cleaned up. They already tried to clean him up but it did not work very well. I told my Uncle that he should see a vet as well but he says he is fine. Poor puppie is blinking a ton he got sprayed right in the face :( Thanks again

I hope the chemicals can't hurt their eyes- I'd take him to a vet. What do skunks smell like?? *curious*

Kind of like a strong sulpher smell, gas like. STRONG!

I would take it to the vets to see what is safe to use to get it off.

I have been a dog groomer for twenty years or so.
Dust your entire dog and his head and face with corn starch. Paying close attention to the head, face and neck where he got sprayed. Hold his eyes shut to get it close into the fur and work it in (gloves on hands help, lol). LET IT SIT FOR A HOUR OR SO.Skunk musk is an oil and the corn starch absorbes it and draws out so you can then wash it off. Then wash the dog in a strong citrus shampoo or citrus dish detergent. Again close around head and neck and washrag it around face and eyes. Then rinse. Then rinse again in Vinegar and water 50/50 (We used Massingill Douche) and DO NOT rinse this out. If you use Tomatoe Juice you will only have what smells like a skunked tomato running around.
You may still smell it while the dog is wet but you wont notice it when he is dry as much if at all. You may smell it a bit if he gets wet agin from tie to time.
The skunk odor will not harm your birds. It can only bother your birds eyes if it is sprayed directly into them. No worries on your birds except them learning the swear words you were using when Chucky came home.

Thanks alot Luckily I did not use any swear words I just ran around the house yelling somethings wrong, somethings wrong and was considering throwing the toaster outside. Until I found my Mom and she said Chuky got sprayed by a skunk. I really thought something was on fire Well I do have one more question. Chucky went to the groomers and they gave my Uncle this Dog Grooming: Waterless Bath Spray by Natural Chemistry at Drs. Foster and Smith It gets sprayed outside but I was wondering if Chucky should not come into the bird room (dining room) with it on. It says it has aloe which I know is safe but then it says it has natural enzymes and organic stabilizers just not what they are. So do you think it will be ok for Chucky to sleep inside tonight? Thanks again :)

Not so, It only changes the olfactory in our noses so we think we don't smell the skunk.

It kinda smells like the worse BO ever with a hit in the face, eyes and nose, acid sting to it.
