eye safety

This is a strange question but I had to ask
Of course I am a worry wart. I worry about my fids just like my children. I was wondering if there is a reason to worry when it comes to bird's eyes getting poked? In the wild, there are always branches sticking out and other dangers but you don't see many birds with injured eyes. I am asking because I bought a small finch nest for my GC to chew and forage in on his gym, not in the cage. It is made of heavy straw, I think, and some pieces stick out where the opening is. I trimmed the edges but new pieces will stick out as he chews. I was worried that Ziggy will stick his head in the hole and his eyes could get poked. The nest is for finches, so I assume it is bird safe but I worry anyway. Is there a cause for concern when it comes to bird's eyes or do their instincts prevent them from getting hurt?
