Hi everyone & Help!!!

Hi there, Im a bit new to all this & not sure if Im posting in the right place, so bear with me & apologies if Im in the wrong place!! I could do with a bit of advice, I have a 10 year old senegal, no problems in the past. Today he has sneezed twice and produced blood from his nose. I phoned the emergency vet but they said this can sometimes happen & not to panic. He seems ok & has eaten today & now he's preening himself. Am I panicking over nothing?????

I have never once had this happen to any of my birds, after 9 years of owning birds. A bird suddenly having a heart attack (for example) "can sometimes happen" but that doesn't mean you should not panic! Hope he's ok.

He seems fine today & is eating well. It was quite scary as Ive never known this happen before. The vet said maybe he had a foreign object in his nose or had caught it whilst scratching, it definately wasn't a scratch. Will be keeping a v. close eye on him today, see how he is.

I would be concerned and bring him in anyway. That cannot be normal. Not trying to scare you though.

That is exactly what I was going to suggest. I have not seen it happen personally, but I have heard from a lot of people who have. If his other behavior is totally normal, I would relax and just keep an eye on him. Taking him to the vet to be checked out just in case is always the safest option, of course, but it can be stressful on the bird and pricey for you.

Hhhmmm, I agree. Nine years old is great but it is a really, really good idea to keep current with vet visits. Each bird has a different "baseline" of what normal is. Don't wait to have a sick bird to get bloodwork or you will not have anything to compare the values to - only the range of normal in most birds.

I am assuming from your recent post that you did take him to the vet, which is good. Too many heartbreaks happen by waiting too long for treatment. It is cheaper and more effective if you don't wait...

By the way, your observational skills are great if you are so tuned in to your bird that you noticed something which might have easily been missed.

Good luck and keep us posted!

I agree, I always take a new animal I get straight to the vets. Then my vet knows I got a new animal, gets to know him/her and does some tests. Boomer needed to go big time, frail little munchkin. It's easier to cure an animal that is treated right away, if you wait it's harder to cure. So that is why I like to go right away.

But yes it is GREAT you noticed.

Thanks for all your advice etc. Bobby is fine now, back to normal, enjoying a head scratch as I type. Still none the wiser as to what happened, even the vet is a bit stumped!! But many thanks. xx
