new carpet

I was looking thru some old threads trying to find out how long the birds need to be kept out of the way when we get the new carpet in. I know some people say just as long as you can smell it, I am planning on keeping them put up in their room for 3 days or so. Luckily it has a separate air system. Any advice, unfortunately it is not low voc?

I read that as long as the carpet smells new the birds have to stay out. I would keep my windows open a lot, try to air it out. I think the new smell stays for a month. Lets see what others say, this is just a guess.
