Stolen Bird
A two month old green cheek conure was just stolen from Petco store #1105 in Northwest Las Vegas. This bird still needs to be handfed more than twice a day. She is a little under weight so I am really worried that she won't get the proper care. If she doesn't get the proper care she may die. If anyone hears anything, please, contact Lisa or Tammy at 702-395-1177.
We will take her back, no questions asked. |

Ok, I've watched this post go unanswered for almost a week. Finally, the devil in me needs to be released.......Perhaps, just perhaps, that little green-cheeked conure is better off OUT OF Petco.

After re-reading my post, I think I gave the wrong impression. I DID NOT STEAL THE BIRD! I was just referring to having to make the comment about Petco! Please don't anybody get the wrong idea...besides, I am not anywhere close to Las Vegas!

Hmmmmmm.....no. I stand by what I said. Hey, nothing personal against Lisa or Tammy, but I would just bet that the people that stole her (and I am not condoning this behavior~it is both illegal and immoral) know exactly how to take care of that baby bird. I have heard stories about people who go into pet shops and find the conditions lacking and after trying to get management to change their policies, they do exactly the same thing. I don't want to ruffle anyone's feathers.....BUT.....I have not seen ANYTHING good about the way Petco handles its "inventory" of birds.

Stolen bird
It's obvious that you have not been in any Petco recently. It is true that some Petco's used to not be the best atmosphere for their animals. But Petco has made alot of changes in the last couple of years. People have been fired and more qualified people have been hired. More qualified people have also been hired to oversee the store managers to ensure proper care. These people make surprise visits to check on the care of the animals. At my store, only a few qualified people are allowed to handfeed the birds. We take the birds out as often as possible to play with the birds. We feed them a balanced diet that includes fresh fruits and vegetables. We don't hesitate to take an animal to the vet if something isn't right. This stolen green cheek conure was sent to us a little underweight. Because of this she was getting extra care, that included trips to the vet and extra feedings around the clock. Our bird specialist even took her home, on her days off, to ensure the proper care of this bird. As I said before, there have been problems in some Petcos. I have even complained to our corporate office when the conditions weren't right in other stores. However, that is not the case in this store. Before you chastise us, you should check the conditions at my store. You might be surprised.

Lisa, I commend you for your personal efforts, and I hope that you won't take my comments as personal attacks~they certainly are not meant to be. HOWEVER...please tell me how a baby that is still being hand-fed is accessible to the public~and HOW, if there is so much oversight in the store that someone would manage to not only get the bird out of the cage without being seen ---- but actually walk out the front door with it? I have been to my local store within the last 6 months. Although the birds are kept in a separate room, the door is open to the public, and there is nothing to prohibit the birds from being accessed by anyone that enters - including small children who like to poke their fingers through the cages - which is exactly what was happening when I made my visit. There was also no employee monitoring this bird "room". You understand these birds are not behind glass or in any way protected by the dangers of being accessible by the public? Do you understand that there IS a danger? Not only of being stolen by inexperienced people, but of being hurt by children, or being exposed to the various germs, bacteria and disease that people carry with them. So, I applaud Petco for hiring someone as caring as you are - but they still have a LONG way to go.
