Seven birds free to good home -- Colorado

Details on why I'm trying to find my birds new homes. (Click)

Parakeets -- I don't have any pictures of these guys yet. They're asleep right now so I'll put some up tomorrow. Their names are Yoshi (blue), Snow (blue and white), and Sugar (albino).

All three are slightly over weight, but nothing alarming. I've been trying to ween them off seed in exchange for more fruits and fresh treats. It's taking a while.

Cockatiels -- These guys are really my major concern. The parakeets are older, Yoshi being about 13, but the cockatiels really need better homes since they have about fifty years of life left between the four of them. I want it to be a healthy, comfortable fifty years.

Archy: He's the first cockatiel we got. I've had him since he was three months old and he's now eleven. In terms of special needs he demands the most. As a chick he was mis-fed by the petstore or his breeder and never completly developed his flight muscles. He was capable of flying ten feet or so up until he was about five when I guess he decided he liked walking more. He has not flown since. As such he is very clingy and loves to ride on shoulders and preen people's beards, freckles, and hair.

He can woofer whistler, say "pretty bird", kiss and bob his head when happy or when you kiss and bob you fingers in front of him, and ring like our phone.

He began to "mutilate" about three months ago. He was not actually following the pattern of most mutilators, and was not, in fact, mutilating. Turns out he became a compulsive preener after a "shock" caused damage to his feathers.

This is no longer a problem for him though and he has made an excelent recovery.

His before and after photos:

Pumpkin: She is pretty fiesty sometimes (especially when brooding), but very sweet if you can give her what she wants (room to run and food). She'll pick at walls if given the chance. I don't know why, but my guess is she's after the calcium in the dry wall. That or she just likes the taste of gypsum.

She and Archy are a mated pair. But Birdy is now trying to... slice himself a piece of Archy's pie. It's not working, but Birdy does manage to piss off Archy and annoy Pumpkin. The trio have bonded though, where one goes, all goes or you incite the fury of the avian orchestra.

Birdy: He's the baby and runt of the group at four years and very cute, but makes enough noise and trouble for all three. Not exactly a screamer, though he borders on it, I really think he's just needy.

He seems to like sitting at an angle and is the most agile of the three. I think he would very much enjoy flying, but has no teachers and no desire to since he stick with Pumpkin and Archy.

Krissy: She's the oddball. Most of the time she likes to be alone in a high up place. Typically she sits on the file cabinet next to my computer or on top of the kitchen cabinet, but she does enjoy being around other birds whether or not she'd admit if given the oppertunity.

Archy and Pumpkin must go together. I think Birdy will have a hard time being seperated from them, but the stress he causes Archy is worse then any he'll have by being taken from them. Plus, I think giving him a fair chance at breeding will help him.

The parakeets I would prefer be put into an aviary, or taken by someone willing to tame and train them. They need to become more active.

I live in Colorado Springs but will drive two hours in order to re-house these guys. They deserve it after living in what they've had to and still showing a capacity to return love.

Just remembered.

All toys, food dishes, perches, treats, and cages will be given with the birds.

And all seven birds love to eat:

1/2 cup Oatmeal
1tbs Peanut butter
1tbs Honey
Enough water to cover the oats
*Microwave for 1 minute on high*
Stir in 1/2 of an apple and 1/4 of a nectarine. Both chopped to about .25" in cubes

I'm sorry, I don't have room for any more birds, but please do not feed your birds honey, for the same reason it should not be fed to human children under the age of 1. It can be fatal.
