Where are you planning to go to school? My brother is in pre-vet (going either domestic or equestrian, though) but works at a large clinic with an avian vet. She went to LSU in Baton Rouge. Apparently it's the number 2 vet school, but I'm not sure if that's for the specialities like equestrian, avian, or exotic. She's a general vet, will do surgeries on an injured bird, counsel on nutrition, test for diseases, treat infections, etc. . .the whole nine.
I suggest you get a job during the summer working for a vet. Vet schools require recommendations from vets before you can get in. And look into LSU. It's hard to get into, but anything worth doing is worth working for, right? Good for you for having a goal and a plan!
