Sad, but my gophen needs a new home

I live in Nashville, TN and have a wonderfully tame and loving bird. But I don't have enough time to spend with him, and I live off site from the bird, and my husband hates him, and he is the one taking care of him while I'm gone all week and I can't have the bird in the place I live during the week. I love this bird, have had it for 12 years, but it would be better for the bird to be gone from this situation....I'm not there, and a person caring for him who hates him.

Like all cockatoos, he squawks and that is why my husband hates him and that is why I can't have him where I live during the week.

I am very much an "animal" person, I love animals and am toying with the idea of selling the bird and using the money to get a dog...(I can have a small dog where I live during the week) and the accessories I would need to keep a dog in a small apartment. BUT...my main objective is to carefully select a good home for my parrot, and possibly have "visitation" rights.

Any ideas???

Goffin Cockatoo

I would definately try to get your parrot out of it's current situation for
sure. If someone hates a bird that much then there's always the chance
your pet might bite that person and he end up hurting the bird.
We are a parrot rescue located in Northwest Georgia and I would like to try and help you. Our website:

I just posted a thread about the largest parrot rescue in the nation. It is in Georgia and you could bring cockatoo there and visit him when you can. Ron is wonderfula with the birds and your bird would have 1,207 new friends. Best wishe, roz

yoiur poor baby!! That is to bad your hubby doesn't like the bird. HOnestly I couldn't offer you a dime, but I could and it would be a super long shot if you were able to get the bird and all of it's belongings here a permanent home.

He would have all the same promisis I gave my current flock of 5.
1. I will never rehome them
2. I will never sell them
3 I will never trade them
4. I will never give them away
5. I will never allow them to be in the hands of children.

And they of course have a Godfather,
but there would be 2 to three things you would have to know.

1. It would mean a very long trip for you and the bird to Idaho.
2. This would be the biggest bird I would ever be owned by. I have been owned by conures for 5 years, and ddo think I could handle living with a bigger bird.
3. The bird, yes would receive a health checkup from my avian certified vet.

but I do think the distance migh be a bit of a problem.
and sadly most people want to recoup what they've spent on purchasing the bird and the cage, and the toys.

I'm just being honest that I couldn't give you anything at all except for a home for the bird, and updates as time progressed, that is if you liked the idea of coming to Idaho and bringing your bird out to a couple.

I'm home 24-7 each and every day except occassionally so the bird would have attention. No children in our home.
and he would be sharing our home with 5 other parrots- 3 conures, 2 cockatiels, 2 dogs, and 1 cat and 2 humans.

other than that the very best care your bird could get if you don't know any parrot savvy people who would love your bird would be a rescue organization.

Good luck with your precious bird.

Hello, I am very interested in adopting a bird. I already own a sun conure so I have a little experience with taking care of birds, just not large ones. My mother and my siblings are actually going on vacation to dollywood in your state in august, and we have a litter of french bulldog puppies that I may be able to talk my mother into trading for your cockatoo if you are interested. We would have to make the trade while on vacation since we live in ohio.

My email is XXXXXXXX if you want to discuss it further.

I say get rid of the husband and keep the bird. sorry had to try and lighten the mood, as I know its a very hard thing to have to get rid of a loved pet, especially one that you have had for so long. If I lived closer and had more room in my house I would gladly give him a wonderful and loving home with me and all my other critters.
I wish you the best of luck in finding him a home and hopefully its somewhere close by where you can at least visit him now and then.
Good luck and Im sorry you have to find him a home.
Hugs

Vicki

She cant keep the bird as she is not at home during the week and it is stuck with her husband, who doesnt like it. This is a horrible situation for the bird. She is right in that she needs to rehome it. I am sure this is terribly hard for you. I think you are doing the right thing. Let us know if you find a good home for it.

I got to thinking, is there some way in the area you are during the week that you could advertise for someone to give him a home that would be near you. Then you could visit him anytime and at least see how he's doing?
I just cant even imagine what you are going through after having him so long, my heart goes out to you and I will keep my fingers crossed and prayers going up that the right solution is found.

Vicki
