Question Wanting to Adopt

Hopefully this is in the right forum.

I am looking to adopt a bird, from a Conure to a Macaw.
I'm home most of the day, and my favourite thing to do is interact with my birds, watch them play, feed them, and make sure they are content.
If you're looking to rehome your bird and you're in Canada somewhere, please send me an email. I've been searching relentlessly and haven't found much in my area.

I am getting so frustrated with my search. why does everyone want an arm and a leg for their large parrot? I'm sure (positive!) they are trying to make money, instead of find a good home. I know this, because they usually sell it to the person who is willing to pay exactly what they are asking.
Only one lady wanted to practically give her Amazon to me, but she lives in the States so it probably won't work out. *sigh*

I'm a very impatient Taurus. I can't wait for good things to come, I'm the type of person who wants to MAKE it happen.

Once again, anyone in British Columbia/Alberta is more than welcome to PM/email me in regards to any parrots you might know of that need a permanent, loving home. :)

I live near Toronto in Buffalo, NY... Depending on where the lady with the amazon lives, I might be able to help :) I've also been looking for another bird for a long time and I can't seem to find any in my area that absolutely need a home without a ridiculous price...

Hi:
This may be the rescue organization's way of thinking....

If you all wish to “adopt a rescue bird”, you might want to check out some rescue sites in your area and read over their rescue policies. Most rescue organization's policies seem to be pretty much the same. Adopting a rescue bird is a lot different than purchasing a bird outright from another source.

Please understand that bird adoption donations are necessary to insure that a rescue person or organization can keep taking in more needy birds, and caring, feeding them, and vet checking them if necessary. Rescue organizations work very hard to keep doing what they do. Do you really respect the time and effort they put forth in caring for unwanted animals?

The common misconception is that rescuers are supposed to do what they do out of the kindness of their hearts – only. Since when? Does your doctor give you “free” treatments just because he is a kind person? I doubt if any home rescue person or organization is that rich to able to pay for all upkeep fees out of their own pockets and to give strangers the animals they take in and care for -- free or almost free. If you find this rescue person, congratulations. They are few and far between. Because of the Internet, the common rescue person is a lot more savy now than they used to be too.

Most animal rescues are not federally funded and get no subsidies to partially pay for costs associated in taking in unwanted pets. It is up to the Adopter to assist, i.e., pay the adoption donation requested. Rescue organizations are insulted when someone wants to "dicker" over a donation amount too. That kind of tells the rescue organization that all one is really looking for is a "cheap" bird and therefore you have contacted their rescue organization thinking you will get your “cheap” bird there. (With all due respect, are you sure you can afford the upkeep of a parrot, if you cannot afford to pay the adoption donation? Owning any pet can be expensive.)

If you are purchasing a bird out of the paper, it is acceptable to offer a lower price to "purchase" their bird, though. And there will be no strings attached either. (There most probably will be an Adoption Contract for you to sign and abide by from that rescue organization too.) You may want to go the purchase route and look for a second-hand bird out of the newspaper instead.

Just some thoughts you might want to think about…

^^I appreciate what you've said. Well, I would definitely consider getting a bird from the nearest rescue, but it's over 8 hours drive away - and they do home visits. I don't think it's worth it, since their large birds go for 600-1000 dollars. That is the price range I'm seeing for large parrots in the classifieds as it is.

I understand that people rarely operate rescues solely out of the kindness of their heart. They'd be broke in a heartbeat, especially when you think of how much one rescued parrot can drain the pocketbook (avian vet costs?)
I don't intend to ever do it for free, either. I am willing to pay for the birds I 'rescue' or adopt, and I'd only think it's fair that, if I ran a rescue, I'd charge a fair rehoming price.

Blah. I dunno. It's just my location that's the hardest thing. I can afford to pay a reasonable price for a bird, but most people (talking about classifieds, etc here) don't want a reasonable price, IMO. They are trying to recoup their losses.

There are two baby Congo Greys at the pet store near my house - they want $1400 for one of them .I think that's so ... outrageous. Who can pay that? Even if I could afford to, I could not bring myself to do it. I totally disagree with parrots being in captivity like this, breeders, etc. Well.. *thinks* I'm not sure if I totally disagree with breeders...but only because there are so few parrots left in the wild. I just wonder why it's all still going on, why do people continue to want birds? they are so much more work than pleasure more often than not, and don't most people have to work full time during the day? Birds are most active during the day, so I think it sucks that they are all locked up in a cage for that time and let out at night when it's convenient for the owner.

*takes a breath* okay I'm getting off topic now, and I'm also ranting. lol

What a huge, complex issue. I still feel like I'm meant to do this (meaning, take in birds) but sometimes I feel overwhelmed by the whole thing.
