My Friend In Indy Wants To Purchase Rescue Parrot
My good friend who lives in Indianapolis, wants to purchase a parrot but she wants one that is in need of a home or rescue, rather then going to a pet shop. She feels since so many birds need homes, she would rather help one and buy one that way then buy from a shop.
She has not had much luck with the rescue groups as half do not even contact her back. She has not owned a parrot yet, but knows people who do (myself and others) so she is knowledgable about them and takes excellent care of the animals she does have. If anyone needs to rehome a parrot in the Indy area, you could post here and I could give you her contact info. It seems a shame when there are so many parrots out there needing loving homes and someone is willing to purchase one (not expect it free or cheap) and no one seems to even contact her back from the rescues. If anyone knows of any good rescue organizations in Indy area that you feel might be good for her to contact, please post that also. She is about to give up and I find that sad, when she could provide such a loving home to a parrot in need of one. Thanks for any input. |

I have heard other people have similar experience in different areas.Has your friend thought of volunteering at an area rescue? There's nothing like hands on experience it's a start.Tell her don't give up there are a lot of birds and animals in need of loving permanent homes.

It does seem hard to find rescue bird(s) in Indiana. I only know of two bird clubs, one in Fort Wayne and CICBC (cicbc.info) around Indy. Even Petfinder has only a couple of Indiana based bird rescues listed. Even if she wanted to go the way of a breeder---there aren't that many easily found.

Has your friend found her bird yet? I am trying to place my bird Pete... After 23 years my wife and I are adopting a traveling job which won't allow us to take our hand-raised Yellow-crown Amazon. I have also developed a slight allergy to bird dander which I'm afraid would be exacerbated in close quarters. Here is some info on him:
Hello- my name is John Scribner, and I live in Bryan, OH. My wife and I are soon to begin a mobile lifestyle as traveling nurses, and will be based out of our travel trailer. Because of the limitations we will be working under, we will be unable to take our Yellow-crowned Amazon parrot "Pete" with us, and are looking for a good home to place him with. A little background information on "Pete". First, we purchased him as a chick from Diana Holloway in 1985. Diana was a local parrot breeder who lived in Bryan who pioneered the breeding of captive Yellow-crowns. We never sexed Pete, as it was unimportant to us, as he was only to be a family pet. Pete has always been in excellent health, was hand-raised by us, and been an integral part of our family life over the years. He is, although, an Amazon, and can be picky about who he likes. Not a screecher, he also is not a feather-picker. He enjoys lots of human foods, which we use to supplement his diet. He loves attention, can talk and whistle, and occasionally sings opera (when he thinks nobody is around). We even took Pete to Hawaii for 4 years during Desert Storm when I was in the Army. He can be trimmed and have his nails clipped easily by just holding him. Through the years he has been around other birds (blue-and-gold macaws and other Amazons) but I can't say he was ever really socialized with them. Pete has a nice black hammered metal cage, and a beautiful stainless steel perch that go with him. Due to the Endangered Status of this species, I am being very particular about placing him. A reputable breeder would be OK, as long as it is not a bird-mill operation. If you know of anyone who might be interested in a beautiful mature bird at a very fair price, please feel free to contact me at the following: John F. Scribner 443 Oakwood Ave. Bryan, OH 43506 1.419.636.2259 e-mail: scribz@msn.com |

I have a friend in MD that is looking for a home for 2 of her birds. My roost is full. If she would be willing to travel to get the bird, have her email me at kensbuns2@comcast.net and I will give her all of the information.

i just joined and am having the same problem (i live just south of indianapolis). i really would prefer a rescue, but the few i have found either won't respond or don't want to adopt to me because i have not owned a bird before. who cares that i have worked with rescue dogs and cats and though i know birds are very different, i am not one to give up when the going gets tough.
so, there are at least 2 of us in indiana who are looking........ flyinglove |
