LOL you described the dilemma well.... i guess it depends on how used he is to his name. chances are that he won't be saying his name nor having a strong connection to it if the previous owners didn't give him a lot of attention.
if he indicates that he's used to it, i probably wouldn't change it but stick with it. on the other hand, if there's little to no connection i don't see a problem comment: i did change nino's name - he was called peachy at the foundation, but the shy guy he is, i don't think he ever associated anything with this name... and nino suits him so much better

I used to worry about the same things. Then I thought of all the strays who have made their way to our home. I typically "toss out" names to new pets to see which ones pique their interest...That's how I ended up with a chihuahua named "Bandit". I wanted to name him something classy, but he would only really respond when I called him a lil' bandit, and it suits him to a T! Anyway, all our pets have always adjusted and accepted whatever we call them...including all the silly nicknames. The only time they seem insulted is when we accidently call someone by another's nickname.
