A Rant

Last Sunday, the animal control where I live posted on Craigslist that they had an amazon whose owner had died. I wasn't sure I wanted an amazon but hated the thought of him there after losing his person.
I called & was told the adoption fee was $50 including his cage. On Monday they faxed me an application and I filled it out and faxed it back. I was told I was #2 on the list.
On Wednesday we went to visit the amazon and spend some time with him. I was told then suddenly I was #6 on the list and to call Saturday. I called & the 1st person had taken him. They didn't require any references, any prior experience or knowledge.
Today, the amazon was posted on a site for sale for $600. I email and asked why she had adopted him if she didn't want him and I believed that was against the rules.
Here is the wonderful email I got back:
You're an idiot! Go ahead and report me you dumbass! I'm not selling the bird. I'm asking for reimbursment for the bigger cage I put him in (which by the way cost me $300. and that was used! ) plus toys that I purchased and the food and treats I bought! Get a hobby you low life!!

I plan to take the ad that I printed out to animal control tomorrow and raise h**l. What kind of way is that to run a rescue shelter? I was told they basically adopted to the 1st person interested.
I'm so mad I could just scream. This beautiful bird deserves better than to be passed from place to place especially after losing his person.

Good for you! Hopefully they do something about it, I never had any luck with athorities correcting any problems. Hopefully you have better luck than I have in the past.

I must add, What a scum bag that guy is. That kind of thing just gets me sooo mad.

You might point out to them that doing this sort of thing with a bird is cruel, and that they are supposed to be there to prevent animal cruelty. Also, check your state laws...is it illegal to "deal exotics without a license"...because that is exactly what she is doing! I fully understand your frustration with this. It seems that sometimes they pick on people who are honestly trying to care for their pets, while allowing morons to get away with atrocious acts. I would also report her to Craigslist (email them...it does wonders), and put up posts deterring others from purchasing from her.

It is probably against the HS rules anyway. Almost always there is a clause that states that it is illegal to rehome the pet, and usually states that the animal must come back to the HS. Might want to check, they could always go get it back!

Wait.....

The humane society and animal control are two different agencies. Also separate from the SPCA. Whichever agency, I can't imagine them advertising on Craigslist. Why didn't they use petfinder? Do they not know about it?

Animal control is the honest-to-god dog pound. Was it really animal control? If so, do they put birds to sleep after a week, like the pound?

I was so curious about this I registered here just to ask!

Sad story.

That infuriates me! I hope the bird is all right. Let us know what happens!

You know, sometimes I think the Humane society is clueless when it comes to birds. First off, they should never have let it go for that cheap.

I called them once because I found a caique sitting in a TINY cage outside on a driveway with cats milling around it. The cage had rubber balls on the bottom, so it couldnt stand on the cage floor. It had no food or water. I drove by at night and it was STILL out there! The next day, I went by after work and it was STILL there. I knocked on the door, and a couple answered and said it was their 8 yr. old daughter's bird and they didnt like the dirty cage inside. I lied and said my caique had recently died and would they sell me their bird? I thought they would jump at the chance. No matter how much I persisted, they refused. Go buy one at Petsmart, is what they told me. Then I said, well give it some food and water. It was so sad to hear the happy squeak it made when it saw the food.

I called the Humane Society. They went out there and said it had food and water (duh!) that was good enough for them. The cage was filfthy, too small, it was left outside and the only reason it had food and water was because I complained to the owners! They never put it back outside again (I checked) and I dont know what happened to it.

It was animal control, not the humane society. I don't know if they put the birds to sleep or not. I was told the 3 quakers, which are illegal here in Georgia were being picked up by a rescue. I did post something on craigslist and on the site where she was trying to sell the bird.
I plan on checking the laws today about selling exotic animals. I work for an attorney so I'm going to have him check. I'm also going to call animal control and make an appointment to talk to the director.
My heart just hurts for this poor Amazon, Tony. When we went to see him, he looked so scared. I sat in a chair by his cage for over 2 hours and just talked to him and rubbed his beak. The thought of him being bounced from place to place just makes me ill.
Thanks everyone for letting me rant. Somedays I really don't like people much.

Animal control in most cities is run by the city hall. Go higher than the dogcatcher. Find out who his/her boss is and talk to them about the situation.

This is just terrible for that poor Amazon there's no telling where it will end up.One of my Amazon's came from an Animal Control Officer she was so glad to get rid of Beau the YNA.When I picked him up the house was filled with cigarette smoke. She kept telling me that he wouldn't eat(I wonder why?)
Would you eat under those conditions? Now it's 2 years later and he's a totally
different bird.

I really hope that Amazon finds a permanent, loving home. This really breaks my
heart.

Marcia
