Arrow If you're thinking of REHOMING your pet...

PLEASE understand that all sorts of terrible things can happen to pets you think are going to good homes. Unfortunately, we can't know anyones full intentions but our own- because sadly many people lie for money, profit or other gain.

There are MANY posts on BB about people 'reselling' beloved pet birds soley for profit, when their owner thought they were giving they're bird to someone for a little less money because they truely loved fids and would be wonderful with them.

I'm currenty attending law school at U of M, and I thought that you all might want to know that before you rehome your pet, you DO have legal recourse. Just like adopting a pet from an animal shelter- as the original owner of your pet, you have the RIGHT the make a contractual agreement with someone you're selling your bird to.

I've attached two example pet rehoming contracts. Did you know anything aperson signs their name on is considered a viable contract in the eyes of the law? (Even, say, when you sign an employment manual).

Additionally, when you rehome your bird to someone, VERIFY the information they've provided you with their driver's license. Be sure that they're not lying about their name, or adress.

I hope this helps all of you find safe, responsible, homes for your fids you love so much.

Sample Animal Adoption Form <---an online sample designed for dogs and cats.

The second attachment is in microsoft notebook (so the file would be small enough) it's simply the first link's contract with a few changes to apply to fids.

Maybe we could sticky this, personally, I think it's really important.

Goodluck finding your fids good, responsible homes.

Im sorry but have to play Devil's advocate on this. Yhea I dont post anymore but I felt this hits home. I signed one of these papers 10 yrs ago, bird was a Horrible plucker- all the way through skin and I wanted to help- gave of my time, home, thousands of dollars in vetting, new cage cause lead was found in cage paint that was chewed off everwhere for 1 year. I was at the persons becon call, me with 2 toddlers and 5 rehomed Large birds. My mother had a stroke, in ICU and we went to her side 850 miles away,2 weeks Bird plucked and bleed out- neighbor disposed of and I got taken to court and sued for original price of bird that time it was 12 yrs old. Since Im older and wiser, No I refuse to sign ANYTHING, In MHO think if one does not want to care for an animal they committed to and want/need to rehome it, they should not make another answer for what they themselves no longer want to care for or deal with. I do offer those that have given us their bird and I have given my word of a forever home, call- come visit and see we stand behind our word,we are big believers in Karma- goes around comes around. People have to realize that life is a constant change, if one can not keep commitments one should not hold another accountable if same should happen to them. We can not control what happens, we have rehommed 18 parrots many for couple hundred dollars, others for free, some with if it doesnt work out, a compensation for time and care given and we will bring back home here. Yes we have taken in some that we have told owners we will rehab and place,in birds best intrest being #1. So please be very careful signing anything, this world is sue crazy and some are just waiting and wanting to make another answer for what they didnt follow through with the committment they originally made!
