Rehome pionus
I have a rescued white-capped pionus that needs rehoming. I found him on craigslist. He was kept in a very small filthy cage with only sunflower seeds. His perch was a piece of split broken off bamboo that someone had shoved through his cage. I couldnt bear to see such a beautiful bird in such horrid conditions, and so I bought him. He had no name and so I named him Max. He was quarantined at a friend's house, who was planning to keep him, but decided against it as she has too many birds. He is not a cuddley bird...yet. But he is talking, allowing his head to be scratched, and playing with toys. I would keep Max in a heartbeat if it wasnt for my male wb caique who is insanely jealous. Max deserves a good home. I am in Phoenix.

There's no chance to make to make it work? No hope that your caique will calm down with time?
I recently brought home a 2-yr old WC Pionus, and my sun conure is also being really bratty about it. There are times when I don't think I made the right decision either, but right now I'm giving it more time. It's been a month and I think it's getting better -- I anticipate it'll be at least a few more months before I can trust them to be out of their cages at the same time. (My sun gets aggressive with her.) Good luck with finding him a new home. Pionus are such sweethearts, and it sounds like you did the right thing by taking him (they didn't even give him a name??!!! wth?) |

I would LOVE to adopt Max (I actually emailed you about it from Kijiji, not knowing you were on this forum) but I think my husband would divorce me. :( My baby Hahns isn't even home yet and he can't believe I'm already thinking about another bird. He just doesn't understand. :)
Very hard to resist though. <cry> -SB

Yes I am in Phoenix, AZ. No, I cannot keep Max. I am not sure what to do with him. He is not tame, but definitely craves human interaction. He is "crying" for me right now to sit next to him. I have had him less than 24 hours so far.
My caique is doing everything possible to get near Max, who is in the other room. I dont want either to get hurt. Generally, the caique and conure are out with me wherever I am in the house, but right now the caique just wants to get to the pi. I work 40-80 hours a week and I dont have time to work with the pionus. I can tell he will make a great pet, but will take a lot of work and devotion. He will gently take kernels of corn from my fingers, but he will also intermittently attack the cage. Whatever side I stand on, he will huddle against and then attack the bars. I have found out that he loves egg. He is much more active than I ever thought a pionus would be! I was told he is 2-3 yrs. old, so he is still young, if this is true. I know he wants to be out with me, but I think he is also scared, and I suspect he was taunted through his old cage. This bird needs a good owner. If I cant find someone, than maybe I will give him to a bird rescue. I dont think I can give him the time he needs, but at least he is in a bigger cage, with toys and better food for now. If you all know anyone looking for a Pi, with a good heart, please let me know. |

ndeben,
Oasis is full. I already checked. Yes, addicted to teq., I wish you were closer. Thanks Sister Blue. I didnt get the email, though. I dont know where kijiji is...sounds far away? Jenesits, I wish I could do the same with Max, but he needs a lot of attn. It is amazing to me that he craves the attn., but he obviously does. He must have been handfed. My caique is about equivalent to 5 parrots. He will not stop moving and this new bird is just the thing he has been looking for...trouble! My cuddley little gcc is mellow about the pi. It is obvious he could care less and somehow recognizes that the Pi is no threat to our relationship. The caique, on the other hand, is curious and or aggressive. I birdsat a sun conure once. Both my birds ganged up on it and tried to attack her every chance they could get. I have never seen anything like it. She was very needy (neglected - found a new home for her) and just wanted to cuddle under my chin, which threw the two birds into a frenzy... Last edited by rockybird; 07-15-2008 at 02:25 AM. |

i can't keep him right now, but BF and i would be willing to pick him up and bring him to the gabriel foundation (and sponsor him) if you can't find him a home. we'd do the trip in pieces (BF is in NM from where i would pick max up)
just another option edit: also, my living situation might change by the end of the year ![]()
