I'm horrified

every Tuesday i bring my kids to a mother and toddler group and my little boy has become very friendly with another little boy and so his mother asked us to come back to her house for lunch which we did, in the corner of her kitchen there was a large dome shape covered by a dirty brown bed sheet! she must have caught my eye glancing over and rolled her eyes and said "its a pair of love birds" and i started talking about pepper and she said that the lovies weren't tame at all and that she couldn't stand the noise so they were mostly covered she went over and took the cover off for me to have a look and i was nearly sick the female (she believes) was cowering in the corner and the male was lying dead on a mountain of old food and droppings and it looked like he'd been pecked or eaten at a little by the female, she looked embarrassed and said he must have died when she was out (there is no way that bird hadn't been dead for at least a few days) well i told her i would take the female but i'd need to clean it up first and i'm telling you i nearly lost my lunch there were maggots every where under all of the seed and droppings urrggghh! so i took the female home and i cannot keep her though my mum and dad are coming to pick her up tonight as they have a friend who keeps finches and he said he would have her as he has a bird house (a huge big shed partitioned into aviaries) in his garden and the noise doesn't bother him! she's totally wild though and is trembling with fear so I've just put her in a quiet room for now. but boy she is loud and piercing but so beautiful she's a peach front which is the only type i've ever seen here in Northern Ireland.
so anyway thats my good deed done for the day, I'm not sure whether to report this though as she would know it was me and while she's only an acquaintance for me my son loves her little boy and he hasn't had much luck making friends since we moved and has had a lot of disruption in his wee life.

bless her little heart. I bet it was sooooo hard to keep your mouth shut seeing all that. SOme people should not allowed to have pets or kids!

Way to go!!! Good job and well done. Hopefully she will be much happier and healthy.

Don't love birds need another love bird?

Wow, you did really good work. Consciously or not she was waiting for both of them to die. At least you were able to save the one. Hopefully in her new home the fear and trauma she's endured will lessen.

It's unfortunate that there are people out there that abuse such innocent creatures. You did the right thing. No doubt the lovebird will be happier in its new home.

do love birds need to be in pairs??
I'm sure my dads friend who is taking her will do whatever needs to be done for her as he really does know what he's doing i think he breeds and shows finches and i have a very vague childhood memory of seeing birds with hair(or feathers) which made them look like they had bowl haircuts like the beetles not sure what they were though, but i know she's going to a home where she'll be treated well and not required to be tame.
I'm still really shocked by what i saw today as this woman is quite well off (well compared to me she is!!) and her house is immaculate and her son is well cared for and a lovely wee boy i think she just didn't realize the noise that they can make and got overwhelmed and didn't know what to do, i know that any one can be cruel to animals but its not quite what you expect.
she was so embarrassed I'm not sure I'll even see her again at the toddler group. i certainly wouldn't want to be seen again if I'd done something like that.

it is people who don't have is much as other or (well off) that appreciate materialistic things and LIFE more than they do. Becasue we work hard to get what we have and keep, while other's it is just handed to them thus they don't care!!!

$$$ doesn't mean everything!

That's truly horrifying. Even hearing about that is really horrifying. The good thing is you were able to be the females angel of mercy. Bless you and her....for all time.

little phoenix has gone home!!

well she's gone to her new home the man actually came and got her himself which was mortifying for me as i had bathed the kids and had a very wet top on (yep they're splashers) plus the house was a mess!! but the good news is that he took the little lovebird he said she needed her beak and nails trimming and was somewhat under weight and he was concerned that if she had pecked and eaten the other birds flesh she could get ill but he said first he'll quarantine her and get her settled and fattened up a little before he goes about getting her beak and nails trimmed and he said depending on how she does health wise he may look into getting her a mate and breeding her, he brought pictures of where she'll be going and i have to say he has doubled the amount of outdoor bird houses he had, his wife passed last year so he pretty much spends all of his time with the birds. they're heated in the winter and everything so i'm really glad that she's going to the right home.
he let my son name her but he was pretty quiet about it (he's only two and a half lol) so i named her phoenix.

No, love birds do not need to be in pairs. That's a huge misconception. In fact, you can read all about how lovebirds don't need to be in pairs in the Sept. Issue of BirdTalk (yes, Sept 2008 lol).

As for reporting her? I wouldn't - this time. Mainly, because you don't have documented proof to substantiate your report, and you've already removed the bird. I would sit down and explain the concept of animal cruelty and make her understand that what she did by neglect is abuse and she could be held legally liable. I would make it clear that it's in your opinion based on the condition of the birds in her care, that perhaps birds shouldn't be owned by her.

...But, then again, I'm not a nice person. heh
