Support Needed For Fostered Birds
Hey there everyone!
As many of you know, our rescue (Macaw & Cockatoo Rescue of NM) just embarked on the great task of caring for and rehoming 30 some birds in addition to the ones we were already fostering, some of which are quite ill. Having delt with larger numbers of birds in the past, I have learned that it is critically important to our organization as well as the birds in our care to reach out and ask for help when the load is too heavy to carry on our own. Those who have worked with us know that our rescue is not only a service to those in our area but also to those who live all around the country. We help where we can and when we are needed because every bird matters, even if we are thousands of miles away. (The telephone is a brilliant invension!) Of the 30 some birds we rescued, we evaluated them and chose the ones who needed urgent medical attention to be seen by our avian vet, Dr. Linda Contos. Some have been put on antibiotics and we are eagerly waiting for lab results for others. Still, we have a number of birds who have not yet been seen by a vet. Their medical needs are not urgent, but we feel it would be irresponsible to adopt these guys out to new families without first being sure that they are in sound health and physical condition so they will need to see a vet as soon as funding becomes available to us. Among these birds are two blue and gold macaws - Toes and Markey, two timneh african greys - Simba & Sheba, Umbrella cockatoo - Sugar, Sun conure - Murphy, and a variety of cockatiels. If you would like to help with the vet care of these birds, please call our avian vets office and make a donation that will be put into our account. The name of the clinic is Ventana Animal Clinic (Albuquerque, New Mexico) and their telephone is (505) 792-3700. The vets name is Dr. Linda Contos. Please specify that you want the funds to go to the Sloan account. They do take credit cards over the telephone. We are registered as a non profit with our vets so any dollars donated go a long way with our discount. If you want to help in another way - like sending food or toys, I would be happy to discuss those options with you. The best way to do this is to purchase the food and toys yourself and send those, so that you know your dollars are going toward the birds. All of this being said... PLEASE be VERY careful to which organizations you donate your dollars or support, especially over the internet. If you are unsure about the practices of a rescue or organization, do not support them until you know how they care for their animals and what their policies on adoption are! (Please feel free to ask us as well!) There are many, many people out there posing as rescues in order to gain personal pet birds free of charge because someone is looking for a "rescue" to surrender to. This does not support the cause of helping parrots in need. It supports the cause of individuals hoarding parrots because they are posing as a rescue - and many of these guys do not know how to properly care for an exotic parrot. A very scary thing! Always ask for references from a rescue and even to see photos of the facility if you are not located in the same area. Do not assume that because someone sounds nice, they are doing right by their birds! Do not make out personal checks or send cash (they could go out to a fancy dinner on your dime for all you know) but rather send donated items such as food & toys or donate directly to a vets office. If you have any questions, comments, or would like to help in any way, please PM me to let me know. If you decide that you would like to help some of these birds, please let me know so that I know who to thank for our donations! Thanks a bunch! -Anna
