Looking to Adopt in Texas

Hi,,I am looking to adopt a parrot here in Texas, I live in the DFW area. A little about myself. I am 53 , retired, own my home, married with two kids in college. I am looking to replace my Gray that was stolen from me when I lived in Pittsburgh Pa. The breed I'm looking for is an Eclectus, Gray, Cockatoo, MacCaw, or Amazon such as a Yellow nape or head, not nessarally in that order. As I am retired I have all the time in the world to spend with a bird. I am not a breeder or reseller but looking for a companion bird. He/she would have a forever home with us. Thanks for any consideration.

Have you checked out your local bird rescues or breeders? (personally I wouldnt refer to getting another bird as replacing your Grey but getting a new bird)

Ummm, Im gonna throw this out here, there is a BIG difference between all the species you posted. What do you want in a companion bird?
Is noise, cuddliness, talking ability, dustiness or space an issue? Do you want a one person bird or a family bird.

For example, how cuddly most eclectuses are depends on how much they were handled when weaning since they are not allopreeners in the wild. Dewey is cuddly when he feels like it.

You may want to check out your local bird store and play with different species to see what they are like.

Anyway, I'm not letting my baby go yet. He's very bonded to me and I'd hate for him to go through any separation trauma. I posted in frustration. I'm learning how to work with him and his screaming and all of us in this household need to work together with him. He really is a great fid and his screaming only happens when he hears me (except for the mornings because he's still sleeping). I"m not sure what to do when I need to leave for shopping or whatever and he sees me go and screams while the rest of the family is still hear. I need to read up on a few things and see what we can do to help :)
aww when did you decide to rehome him again? Its a shame you couldnt work through things.

I know. :( And if I were by myself I would. In the meantime my son's sensitivity leaves him crying and frustrated because Harley won't stop squawking when he hears me. I can't have him with me all the time!
He does like all the new toys I gave him though. He's got a short attention span! lol I figure, although it will be hard on him, I think the younger he is the better adjustment he'll have. I think.

The other day there was a posting for a grey on CL. It didn't sound like the usual "I want to dump my bird and get lots of money for it" type of post. I can look for it if you would like.

Oh believe me I am quite aware of the different characteristics of the various species I mentioned and have been around each of them. This isn't something I'm doing on a whim or impulse. I'm curious as to the way you responded, do you feel someone shouldn't own multiple species at the same time? I feel a birds personality also has alot to do with the way hes brought up. Anyway it will be as much of the bird adopting me as me adopting it.

We are one state over in NM if you are interested in adopting a bird from out of state but nearby. You can PM for details if you are interested.
