bird fever. when i saw my newly rescued spectacled amazon with mushy banana all over his head covered in bird seed i have to admit i was stunned by the imagery.
i wish i had had a camera. i currently have 4 animals.... a dane a calico a love bird and an amazon. at 61 years old i am retired and alone but for my companions. i have a litte more love to share. i rescued both birds in the last 8 months. they are in their two's. i would like to move up to a larger bird if possible. a talker would be nice. being retired price is an issue. i live in summerville sc. is it ok to ship birds or is that something that is not desirable? if not than i will do whats right by the birds and just look for local rescues that fit my circumstances. i ran accross this ad on kijiji... what do you folks think? Charleston (SC) parrots & birds for sale - Free Charleston (SC) Classifieds at Kijiji - cockatiels, african greys, & other pet birds for sale in Charleston (SC) if any of you run accross a rescue in my area i would appreciate a heads up. thanks fellow bird lovers dana |

i was looking at the greys. imagine that...... i went ahead and emailed them but my thought was that it was a scam also. although... i was lucky enough to get my zone fred and a huge new cage for free.
there are plenty of unwanted birds out there with the wrong owners or in the wrong environment. folks who didnt realize the committment that birds require. i know. i have two. maybe im foolish but i am sure that i will find the right bird at a reasonable price and not have to perpetuate the buying and selling of birds. thanks for your help. |

yep, could not agree with you more. Don't need to buy, in this economy plenty of people are just looking for a person with experience to take a bird in. If you lived closer to me I would give you one.
Good bird people are a Godsend to me! |

I have a question... just something to think about. Being an RN, I have to work with situations all the time that come up with the older population. You've gotten young birds, but you're not a young adult. Do you have plans as to where your birds will go when you can't care for them anymore? A lot of older adults don't make plans for things like who will be in charge of making their healthcare decisions, etc... and these birds you have will live a long time. If you haven't, please start making plans as to what should happen with your birds if something should happen to you.
It's a morbid thought, but good planning. I am very sick, and I've made plans for my birds... because you just never know.

are we on the same wave length or what?
i was thinking exactly about where my companions would go to if i kicked the bucket. i am at odds with my family so i am alone. my current sitation where i live makes me a hermit so i need to do something. i honestly dont know of any individuals i would trust with my animals. many of my friends love animals but would they LOVE my companion should i croak. maybe this would be a good discussion for this board. i dont know a soul here but i am sure without a doubt that their are litterally hundreds if not thousands of folks here who would take care of both my birds. think i will start a thread on this issue if there isnt one already. thanks

The best thing to do is to create a legal document. If you check out Phoenix Landing's website they offer advice on this and have classes sometimes on this topic. I know they operate in North Carolina and I think possibly now in South Carolina so check it out.
Don't leave it up to someone else because they may not know what to do. One of my birds was left in a home where the lady who lived alone fell down the stairs and passed on. It was a terrible thing, I am sure. Friends of hers checked on her and discovered what had happened and began placing her birds with other people but could not place them all. My bird was one of the unwanted ones. It was a fluke accident... I have a written will and each bird is placed with who I want him/her to go to if something happens to me. Each of my friends has agreed to the bird/birds they are listed to take. I needed to have this document in case something ever happened to me. Sad thought, but I have birds who came to me because of the owner passing on or becomming ill or entering a nursing facility.... |

I just looked under Petfinders for South Carolina and they have a few birds you might be interested in. I need to also draw up documents for my baby Hiccup and my snake Cloud. They will both outlive me.
Sometimes I think about getting another bird, but I don't know if Hiccup needs to be an only child, and then with my health being pretty rotten lately... do I really want to take on another pet? I need to recruit someone to come clean the bird cage this weekend. |

well in all honesty i dont have any bird loving friends. even it they agreed to take my birds in would they give them the care and love they need? i doubt it.
i will probably try and make arrangements with a local rescue to take my birds. that way i will be assured that the home they are adopted into is up to the task. any comments on this? i have looked at petfinders in sc and have contacted some of the organizations. none have bothered to contact me back. i am NOT impressed!
