Two Cockatiels and a Nanday Conure- Free to a Good Home

Hello. I tried posting this in the classified section but it would not take.

We live in Hyde Park, NY in Dutchess County. This is an extremely difficult decision for us to have to make but we feel we’re doing our birds a disservice to keep them when perhaps there is a better home for them. We’re traveling more than we realized we would be and we are unable to give them the attention and time they warrant as they’re very sociable.

We adopted our two cockatiels (female, Percy and male, Roosevelt) and our Nanday conure (Sunny) in 2007. Percy is around two. Roosevelt is around three and Sunny is two.

Sunny was weaned by me and has a sweet disposition. He talks and goes to the bathroom on command in the morning so when he is taken out of his cage, he doesn’t make a big mess. He enjoys shoulder time and really likes being around people.

Percy and Roosevelt were adopted separately but have bonded. They’ve mated but Percy has never produced an egg. We try and make certain this won’t happen by giving them warmth and plenty of rest (12+ hours per night). They prefer to stay within eyesight of each other and if I leave the room with one on my shoulder, they’ll start screaming for each other and usually the one on my shoulder will fly back to the cage.

Percy and Roosevelt share a cage and Sunny has his own cage. Still, Sunny is bonded to the cockatiels and the cockatiels are bonded to Sunny as they’re always side by side in their cages.

Both the cages are attractive, large and on wheeled carts with storage space underneath.

The three birds are on a pellet and seed diet supplemented with fresh greens and fruit every morning.

My hope is that there is someone interested in adopting our birds. They are FREE to a good home and we will include the cages, toys and, of course, whatever food we have left.

Please send me an email at betweenthelens@optonline.net if you're interested. In the past, I've posted photos on here of the birds, if you'd like to look at these or I'll be happy to send photos to you via email, if that works better for you.

Thank you very much,
Laura Bullock

You should put this in the rescue & rehoming section. I wish I could take them but I don't think I could handle 3 more birds.

Laura Im sorry you are having to make this decision. I know its a tough one, no one wants to rehome their pets. I feel though by reading your post that you really want them to go to a good home. I know there are people on this board who are completely suited for birds and I hope you can find someone to take in your babies for you. You are offering them for free? Your nanday is beautiful - I wish I was closer to you!!!!

Sydney,

Thank you so very much for your kind reply. Yes, we absolutely want the birds to go to a good home. In fact, we received an offer of adoption from someone who did not understand the care involved. She immediately said, "Yes" to all three even when I told her the Nanday has the loudest screech of any conure. She said, "Well, I talk loud." She had no idea what she was getting into and I politely declined. Thereafter, she told someone we knew mutually that she was glad I declined as she decided she didn't want them.

There is also a bird rescue nearby and they were willing to take the birds immediately and tend to them until someone comes along to adopt them or put out feelers for people who might want to adopt them. We chose the latter as we want to know where they're going and we want to make certain they go to a home where they'll be loved and taken care of as we have cared for them.

Yes, they are free, completely free to a good home. We have two large cages on wheeled platforms and I have books on both species as well as bird toys that I'll pass on to whomever adopts them.

Thank you again for your response.

Laura

Good luck finding a wonderful home for your birds. I commend you for putting them first by looking for the right home, including all of their goodies, and not expecting an outrageous "rehoming fee". You obviously care for them very much. Anyway, just my 2 cents.

I think that letting them go to a bird rescue is a good idea but ONLY if it is a rescue you know and trust. There is a rescue in Michigan who takes finding homes for babies brought in VERY SERIOUSLY. They put people through an immense application process and I believe they even do a home check. They have people come in and visit with the bird to see how they interact with it and they make sure the person knows EXACTLY what caring for a bird means. I think there is also a "no breed" and no sell contract, stating that if breeding happens or if the person wants to rehome then the birds come right back to the rescue so they can be cared for and found a forever home. Ive talked to the people there when I was looking to get a GCC a few months back. They said only one bird has ever come back and that every bird they rehomed, they get at least monthly updates and photos - they know all their babies are safe which I think is wonderful!!

All that being said, for me, I would let them go to a rescue that knows what they are doing and is committed to giving your bird a wonderful home and life. I think this process is made easier knowing that there are people out there who will let you know what is going on and what your birds are up to. EVen send you some photos!! I also recommend writing a letter to the future owners. Even though they will not be your birds anymore, if you find a special person who takes them in than I think they can at least write you and let you know they are loved and OK. I have taken in a few re-homes and I kept in contact with each person. I know it makes their hearts heal a little faster and gives them solace knowing their birds went to a good home.

Sorry to make this so long - Im just trying to offer some suggestions. I do NOT suggest putting your birds on craigslist or kijiji or hoobly or any of those other places. People will swoop these birds up and unfortunately you cannot screen that well who they will go to. People can look great on the surface and really not have good intentions. Especially since you are offering these birds for free, it is important to not let them go to just anyone. I hope that you can find someone who you know or who is a friend of a friend so that you can somewhat keep your birds close to you.

I wish you all the best - please keep us updated!! = )

You had so many responses, I moved it for you so you didn't lose them, then deleted the copy.

I am sorry that you have to rehome your birds. It is nice to see that you care so much about the birds that you are willing to give them free to a good home. Good luck in your search.

Thank you again, Sydney, for your kind message. I do believe we're going to wait it out and see who the rescue people might find (but we'll keep our birds with us until we hear there is a suitable interested party.)

We would never ever place an ad anywhere other than here as we want to make certain the people who adopt our birds are competent, caring and well-suited for them. We've spoiled our birds and we want them to be spoiled in their new home and loved as much, if not more, than we've loved them.

I will certainly keep you updated and please don't apologize for writing anything of length here. I am touched that you have responded to my post in such depth. It shows how strongly we all feel about our fids.

Thanks so much, Eliza!

hollyhawkz~ Thank you so much, on all accounts.
