Emotions

I feel the point Birdboard members are trying to make, is that in many cases due to the seller trying to make a profit, these birds, many of them probably living under poor condtions, have difficulty finding the perfect parront due to the seller's priority of making a profit.

It makes it difficult for a bird lover to "just surf" past it without feeling sympathy for the bird and wishing to help.

Please try to understand the emotional aspect the members of Birdboard are feeling.

Thumbs up craigslist

I never look at cl. I now have a rehomed macaw that came from craigslist. You guys posted the ad on birdboard to point out this poor bgm who had no toys in his cage and said they were asking 850, It was even implyed the bird was probably abused. Seeing how the ad was posted for the town i live in i decided to give it a call. All is not what it always appears. The bird was not neglected in any way the young man just didnt realize how much time and money was involved in owning a macaw. I ended buying him for 600 with a huge cage so you all who do look are actually helping some of these birds get decent loving homes by posting the ads on the board for those of us who dont scan the ads to see. Thanks guys for my great social friendly bird. He was a steal for what i paid. The young man was actually happy his bird would be going home with me. He spent over a thousand buying and vetting the bird and was looking to recoup some of his money. He only had the bird for a couple of months so i dont really blame him for trying to get what he can back. You all must realize not everyone can afford such a large loss as to just give away a bird. Offer what you can and they either accept or reject. Its that simple.

Well, in the UK we have Gumtree and on there I see a few tiels in my area of Scotland free to good homes. I dearly want to take them in but I have my two to think of, plus the fact I've no finance, etc

Now I stop looking on there, there's no need to torture oneself about what sounds like a whiteface free to a good home >_<

But that doesn't make sense because if they couldn't afford to 'lose' that amount of money they wouldn't have bought the bird in the first place. Once they've bought the bird the money has gone, regardless of whether or not they subsequently keep the bird. Do you see what i mean?

If someone is so hard-up (and in these times i realise that's a possibility) they need to sell their bird to make some money then why not just say so?

If they need to rehome the bird for any other reason, and certainly if i needed to rehome my birds, money would be the very last consideration. A good home would be my first priority.

I could (and have) give a rehomed bird a very good home, it would have the best of everything from cage to food to freedom, I couldn't however afford to pay a large sum of money initially.

Would it really stop someone from coming on here and complaining about "all they care about is the money?"

From all the posts here that complain about craigslist the theme is always the same.

Boloney, If I cared about how my bird was going to be cared for I would ask for "ONLY" what I absolutely needed for the bird and accesories. IF i were going to rehome my bird---I'd call and get a vet reference, visit the persons home....discuss diet, toys, general care. I'd then give them the cage, play gym, bowls, perches and every fav toy for that bird. I'd try to develop a relationship with that person so that I could "occasionally" discuss the birds happiness after it had been rehomed.

I think there are too many birds in rescues with "large adoption fees" hanging over their heads. I think that if someone can buy a newly weaned chick for only a few hundred more than a plucked, skiddish, biting or sick bird...then they certainly will.

On the other hand if you cannot afford the possibility of vet bills, good food, toys, perches and everything your new bird needs....it is better to pass then to not care for a bird in need.

I've spent a LOT of money on my rescues.....MUCH MORE than any newly weaned chick.

Anyone who buys or anyone who adopts cannot expect a free ride, however, folks who are trying to rehome should consider the welfare of their bird...first and foremost.

I've done alot of rehomes and adoptions through my club. Through all of them, not a dime was passed. It was about the bird, not the money.
I remember it took 5 years to get one grey to come in for adoption. Now look on all the rehome sites and shelters that are over run and turning birds down.
It sad.

Probably not, no. But if someone really is so hard-up they need to raise funds this way then their reason for selling must be respected. I've absolutely no issue with that.

It's those who claim they need to rehome their bird purely for the sake of the bird and THEN ask for top dollar for the bird who concern me because the best home isn't necessarily going to be with someone who's able to flash the cash.

I adopted 5 of my birds off Craigslist from truly caring people that needed to find good homes for their birds. All of them were loved and cared for. I email the previous owners on a regular basis to keep in touch and let them know how the bird is doing.

They are all healthy, no screamers and no pluckers.

You just need to talk to the people rehoming and also go to visit the home and the bird. You just need to do your due diligence.
