central oregon

So I make a visit to the only store in the area that is not petco or petsmart. The lady is very nice, and often ends up with birds that are unwanted. She is the closest to a bird rescue I know of around here, even though it is a petstore. For the first time there was a macaw, a scarlet. I talked to him, he tried to feed me, he was well behaved. They let me play with him, and he didnt test me at all. I already have a macaw cage, but he is on consignment for a price I cant afford. Along with 5 other parrots all from the same home. The owners had a baby and decided to rehome thier parrots. Scarlet macaw, 2 types of Amazon, a Jenday, a sweet tiel and a Cockatoo. The too' needs love, she is making her pin feathers bleed. The Scarlet was such a good boy, I was surprised. Didnt pinch me, didn't argue, was just a good boy. Anyone in the area looking for a new friend should check them out.

This does not sound like a rescue to me - it sounds like a store if the price is too high for you to afford and the cockatoo is pulling her feathers out. Animals are not property for consignment...I always HATE to see that. What makes it worse is that it can call itself a rescue by taking in "unwanted" animals...the owners obviously want their share of the cut, don't they? How irresponsible to have that many birds at child bearing age and dump them at a store. What is wrong with people?

The other thing is that if a bird acts one way in a store - that means nothing behaviorally. All birds usually want attention and have to vie for it under those circumstances.

Here is a good test on the welfare of the "rescue" - how many toys does each animal have in it's cage and it is representative of what the store is selling to their customers for their birds??????? Also, rescues vet their birds and that is why you pay....did the store do this??????

You sound like a nice person, maybe you should open a real rescue.

oops

I was just saying she is the closest thing to a rescue. Her store is not doing well, as well as most of the busnesses around here. I think she took them on consignment because she could not afford to buy all the birds outright. But yes, it sucks they charge so much money. They probably will be there a long time. The cages are always sparkly clean when I do, and they have lots of toys. She also feeds pellets and treats, not seed. I wish I could do rescue, but I dont own my home. I do have many rescue budgies, and other little guys. I dream of having my own home, to rescue any bird in need, no matter how big. I just dont have anymore room. I have plenty of time, and heart, and knowhow, but short on resources.

and yes I cant believe the owners of the birds got rid of them because of a baby. The only thing to rip me from my fids would be nothing short of death. They are all gorgeous loving birds. I just dont understand...

Like ilikebirds, it would be hard for me to give up my fids. If times were tough I would give up personal stuff so that they would always be properly taken care of. In fact, I now bring my lunch and we do not go out to eat as much. I do not even buy as many clothes as I used to or do my nails (which they would bite off anyway!!)....but my girls, they do not have to do without.

I can understand a baby is a handful, but surely they could have at least kept a couple and made sure that the others went to great homes. How confusing it must be for those poor parrots!

I guess one has to walk in some one elses shoes to see what they are personally going through to really now the reasons thse decisions are made. I just know me and what I would do.

Sometimes babies are allergic also.....
