CL listing for cage... intriguing idea

I was looking for a used cage for my U2. I found a listing from a local person with a great price (I'm sure most would agree that sellers often/usually ask almost new price for cages in poor condtion). I was excited but I have never had much luck with CL. I emailed but got no response. I sent a second email and received a call minutes later. The seller informed me that the cage was no longer available but since I obviously had a large bird (reason for wanting the large cage she was selling) she asked if I was interested in rehoming her bird, a male eclectus parrot. I said no thank you and hung up immediately so we never discussed price because I knew my husband would say NO! and I was afraid if I spoke any longer I would say yes. LOL! Yes, I too suffer from MBS.

Anyway, when I thought about what happened and the length of time the cage had been listed I now think the cage was never for sale. I think this was a unique way to weed out the creeps and find a good home for her bird. Something to think about.

I don't think I could have turned down a male ekkie. They are fabulous.

If the cage was gone already, where the hell was she putting the bird?!

I think the OP is trying to say the listing was for a BIG (possibly non-existent or only sold WITH the ekkie) cage too get people to contact her that are knowledgeable about BIG birds... and that might give her ekkie a Good home because they were willing to buy a BIG, PROPER cage.

weeds out the people who would put big birds in teeny cages.

Interesting idea.

They probablly buy birds + cages cheap off CL and turns around to sell them again. I don't think I could ever get a bird off CL personally. Only reputable breeders or rescues. Unless the bird was cheap (500-300) because then obviously they are not about the money. If it was a flipper they would sell it back for 1k.

Posting a great cage for sale on CL would be one way to put you in touch with *Bird people* who might want to or know someone to give a fid a good home... if I ever had to re home a large bird that really needed a knowledgeable owner this wouldn't be a bad way to do it.

And, on my own note... Meena came from craigslist- hand fed, weaned onto zupreem... all of $30 I think. Not everyone on CL is a scammer, although we do have to be careful... I see lots of questionable postings.

I just try to stay away from there as much as possible. After dealing with the people I rescued my macaw from, I don't want to put money into the hands of flippers.

I do agree it is a good way to rehome though. If I was rehoming, I suppose that would be a good way to find a home for the birdy :)

I don't think all Craigslist ads are bad - just most of them!

I got my second Sun Conure Malibu off of Craigslist - I paid $200 for her and her cage. They also gave me a lot of food and books and things. The lady seemed distraught to give Malibu up - I could tell she was sad. She wouldn't help us take the cage out to the truck so her husband had to help us. But I think she just wanted to find the bird a good home and that's why she wasn't trying to make money off of the bird.

But I definitely would be wary of the people trying to sell Sun Conures for $500 or $600 or whatever...they are just trying to make money and don't care who the bird goes to.

Thanks for all the imput. I don't know why I go to CL either and Hoobly, DP Market, petfinder or kijiji (where, btw, today I saw the same add from the same seller at $50 less) for that matter. Just can't stay off. MBS I guess. At least here on BirdBoard I know I am not alone. I would love to rehome a galah cockatoo and am currently working on resisting that urge. LOL! (Hmmm... that just struck me LOL? - Lots of Luck?)

Oh boy I dont think I would have been as strong as you!!! That is quite a clever way to weed out bad people - I wonder what the rehoming fee would have been. I love eckies UGH they are so cute.
