Aurora Rescue Birds - Need Help
TGF was involved in a huge rescue in Aurora Colorado recently. It consisted of 111 birds, 74 of which are at the TGF Aviary.
Here is the Aurora News article explaining the situation: Aurora Sentinel > Archives > News > Metro Aurora > City seizes 111 birds from Aurora home and here is a statement from Julie Murad (Founder of TGF): "74 of the birds have been permanently placed into TGF’s care, and each of these birds is in need of sponsors. Details about each of the birds will be our Holiday focus, which I will be writing this next few days. McManus is scheduled for trial 12/10; has court ordered stipulations to meet by 11/5 for the 35 birds released to her on 10/30, including unannounced visits by AAS, PACFA, a veterinarian, for 12 months. She can have no more than 35 birds in her house at one time, and the house, birds, etc. must be maintained in conditions acceptable upon AAS/PACFA/veterinary inspections. She lost her PACFA license, and states that the birds returned to her are her “pets.” Further details pending post-trial and other requisite court hearings. She did pay $12K to the City of Aurora, which was assessed by AAS for specific fees. How that money is distributed is up to the courts and City Attorney. We’ll see. JWM" and here is a statement from Patti Christi @ TGF: "This case is still under investigation by the city of Aurora but I can tell you that TGF was called to assist with the care of these birds by the court and the city animal control. TGF has provided food, housing and daily care, along with having the staff veterinarian evaluate each bird medically and treat as necessary. 74 birds all need medical and viral testing before they can leave quarantine (all of which TGF will bear the financial responsibility for), as well as food and toys for their daily needs. Any assistance is appreciated! You are correct that without the willingness of TGF to assist the city with these birds, they would have been assessed differently and possibly euthanized based on the standard of evaluation that the city has. This is in no way a reflection of inadequate care or standards on the part of the city but rather a system that uses a different behavioral evaluation (based on dogs and cats primarily) so we are grateful that the city asked TGF to assist them on this case. For now, the birds are doing well under the circumstances. They receive fresh foods daily and they have enrichments in their cages to sustain them while in quarantine." Here is info for anyone interested in helping out the Aurora recue birds. This comes directly from Patti Christy at TGF: Please direct sponsorships to the TGF aviary address: (go ahead and print out the form http://www.thegabrielfoundation.org/...m_rev11.08.pdf fill it out, check "other" and put in "Aurora Rescue Birds", then mail it to the address below, attn: Patti or KarenV) The Gabriel Foundation Aviary and Adoption Center 39520 County Road 13 Elizabeth, CO 80107 attn. Patti Christy or Karen V TGF will designate it as the Aurora Rescue birds. As we get more information about individual birds (names, personalities, etc) we will start to post more updates. As you know, we have a great need for toys! Most of the Aurora birds are smaller – Conures, some Asiatic parakeets. We have a few Amazons, Greys, Eclectus and that size bird but our need is for the Conure sized/type toys. As far as sending food, since we prepare most of our diet fresh daily with vegetables and grains, and use our special seed mixes, we don’t really need food sent per se but if they want to contribute toward food they can note that on their sponsorship and we will make sure it goes to buying food. Patti If you have any questions, contact me, or you can e mail Patti @ education@thegabrielfoundation.org 303-629-5900 x213 KarenV @ birds@thegabrielfoundation.org 303-629-5900 x216 Again, thank you so much, it so needed and appreciated

Holy crow...and there is someone who wrote a comment below the article defending this breeder, saying she has "enemies". Well, she might have enemies but they didn't stage the filthy cages and lack of water, that's all her doing (or lack thereof). Best of luck to all these birds!!

I understand from reading elsewhere that the conditions were awful, and many of the birds are malnourished with various health problems. Obviously a case of a woman getting way in over her head, and not being able to recognize the birds were suffering.

I remember reading this story...couldn't tell you how I stumbled upon it in the first place.
I hope these birds, and those who are unhealthy or need medical attention, make full recoveries and find wonderful forever homes.
