they normally are.. but I think the more inhabited by humans a area gets, the more likely the birds are to vanish. We use to have wood peckers, but out city grew and so very few and humming birds there gone too. very little robins.. Sad really :(

Looks like a red-tailed hawk to me...I'm not sure because I can't see the coloring in the photo.

How true. Here in SOCAL we have 2 closed bases (MCAS El Toro & MCAS Tustin) and they are building thousands of homes and stores. Meanwhile they've either cut down hundreds of trees or removed them for transplanting ( most are now dead). So all the birds, squirrels and other critters have to move on. Used to be lots of hawks around the bases, now we only see the occassional one. It is indeed sad.
