Eating Wood ASHES?

Ok so Im feeding my flock and looking out the window and I see some crows come in. So I watch them. Its not common they come this close to the house. Ahhh, well I notice the spoiling Cantelope I asked my husband to loft into the woods didnt quite make it very far. Those little buggers are wanting some fruit salad in the snow (its snowing BTW). NO? They choose to pick hard and earnest at the wood ashes from our fireplace that I spread on the ground out there. Melon right next to them. They could care less about that melon but REALLY were working on the ashes. Anybody ever sen this before? They must need something from it? I watch those guys come in the SNOW frozen cold and Bathe in the creek and then sit in the wind in the tree and preen dry *GEESH* brrrrrrrrrr.

that is really interesting, the only thing i can think of is that wood ash is primarily made up of Calcium and Potassium. so maybe they need these things and that why they eating it? really interesting they are though!
if you have a garden toss the ashes on it...it's good for the plants too! lol

it's the carbon,
carbon and burned matter is good at absorbing toxins within an internal environment such as poisons and urea build up in certain organs.
i have many wild birds around my place and have experienced this many times here in australia.
