The national bird of Israel

The Dochifat or Hoopee as it is known around thew world is the national bird of Israel, today one visited on the roof of a neighbours house to sit and preen itself while basking in the sun. I will upload the film, not really close, but visual enough to se the bird live in a inhabitated area. In the meantime here is a picture I snapped.

Amazing markings and that crest is gorgeous. I know nothing about them so please forgive my ignorance here. Are they part of the pigeon/dove family? The body looks about right but the beak looks too long and fine to be in that family.

Thanks for that Rewki. I had a bit more of a look and it seems they belong to the same group as kingfisher and bee-eaters. Explains the beak. They really are stunning.

Here is the uploaded film of the hoopoe, when I moved to the Norfolk Pine tree it was to capture a pair of pigeons who reside in that tree for about 6 years now. Also in the film you can see for just a moment the yellow vented bulbul bird. The bulbul bird pigs out on all of our garden fruit with soft skin, apricots, shesek(read below), peaches, figs, mangoes, and apples. They do not destroy the pomegranets or citrus fruits. They have become a nuisance to agriculture growers as have the unfortunately the ringnecks and quakers.

Shesek...

The most delicious fruit on the planet. It's smaller than an apple, but bigger than a grape, and orangy colored. It has between 2 and 5 pits inside. It tastes sweet and slightly tart and is very juicy. The dictionary translations are loquat or medlar, not that it helps. Try some. They come in containers and are sold by the kilo in Israel.
