On a very dismal and depressing day
A little Grey bird in a window came and sang to me a song

The little Grey bird in a Window

On a very dismal and depressing day
A little Grey bird in a window came and sang to me a song
It picked me up and took me away
And for a moment all my pains were gone

A very dear friend that I have neglected
Sent to me a gift of love my way
And into it her heart she poured totally unexpected
So that I may see it every day

Forever and a day it shall be mine
For it speaks to me as if to tell a story …
“Through me light will always shine
So that you may see the world in all it’s glory.”

And the darkness lifted and all was fine
As light entered and chased the ghosts away
And once again light and life were finally mine
For a little Grey bird in a window sang a song to me this day.

For Alex

I knew you not my friend but you touched my life
Not only mine but that also of my wife
You see, before we learned of you
All we knew is that budgies come in blue

Well now it’s your entire fault
That I can’t blame the Supreme Gestalt
That forever and a day

Freckles

Freckles

Hear one, hear all
The very sad news
I’ve joined your club
I’ve paid my dues

I now know of what you speak
When needed the words you seek
Are simply just not there

Freckles

Hear one, hear all
The very sad news
I’ve joined your club
I’ve paid my dues

I now know of what you speak
When needed the words you seek
Are simply just not there
Leaving you standing, gasping in despair

It’s just a bird, they say
Not knowing what that means
To have lost a friend today
As down your face a single tear streams

And time stands still, when comes the silent roar
As you hear those words so clear
Heralding what the future has in store
Refusing to accept, to believe, as you face your greatest fear.

“He was just a bird!”
But that’s not true
He was my friend
I’m telling you!

“He’s gone,” he says with whispered voice
As the blood rushes to your head
And you know, if he’d only had the choice
He would not want to say, “Your friend is dead”

So here I sit, contemplating
Is this a dream or is this real
So, here I sit, waiting
Trying hard to just, not feel

Fare thee well my little friend
We shall meet again once more
As we all gather in the end
To stand together in front of heavens door

“I Love you Freckles!”
As I sit here watching my flock play
And wondering if they know how silly they look
While for them it’s nothing new and happens everyday
As they swing from playground cranny to bookshelf nook

Ah the funny little bird hanging by his toe
As he scrambles so valiantly up the rope
Herculean the struggle and a long way to go
Trying to look regal and not like a total dope

No other critter can go from deftness to daftness
Like the Gymnastic fantastic feathered performer
Impressing on us their repertoire with its vastness
As the aerialist dives from high to the lowest corner

Then comes crashing down from above …
… till at the bottom they then lay,
looking up forlornly and seeking our love
We worry; we laugh but adore them anyway

Sounds from the Soul

Sounds from the Soul

Many times throughout our History
Words of wisdom have been heard
And it really is no mystery
That the most profound of any word

Should not come from Man in all his Vanity
But from the beak of a bird
For they do not suffer our insanity

Sounds from the Soul

Many times throughout our History
Words of wisdom have been heard
And it really is no mystery
That the most profound of any word

Should not come from Man in all his Vanity
But from the beak of a bird
For they do not suffer our insanity
And ring true when they are heard

“What are you doing,” and “How are you today”
Slide glibly across our lips without any thought
But when our Parrots to us this say
It is with an alacrity that can’t be bought

Some find it hard to say these words every day
Something that’s so simple to do
And that’s to say
That “I love you”

To have heard it from a Parrots beak
To hear it with a start
We understand that they can speak
But they mean it from the heart.

So the wisest words that all men seek
The words that make the world go round
Can be found at the tip of your Parrots beak
Where only love and wisdom can be found

A Good Life

I know what your Grandpa did
And your papa too
When I was hatched from my egg
Back in forty two

I saw him kiss your mom
Way before they wed
The big day of the Prom
And all the things they said

The day that you were born
I was there to see you cry
Then I, in my loyalties, was torn
When you looked me in the eye

I’ll live to see you marry
And have a kid or three
But before I grow too weary
And life will set me free

There’s something I must say to you
Before I spread my wings and fly
There’s nothing I would change or do
A life of love and peace had I

I loved your Grandpa and your Dad
And of course I loved you too
And all the good times that I’ve had
Starting that day in ‘forty two

The Smell of Grey

The Smell of Grey

Essence, aroma, fragrance, bouquet
These are all words to describe a smell
But all of them so very cliché
And don’t do the job so very well

But that’s not what I want to convey
To you, the whiff of life
It’s more than … what I cannot say

But all of them so very cliché
And don’t do the job so very well

But that’s not what I want to convey
To you, the whiff of life
It’s more than … what I cannot say
Filled with something rife

It is the unbound wildness
That fills the air
With a tangy mildness
Reminiscent of despair

Closed rooms and shuttered windows
On a long and wintry night
Within the loneliness it grows
The feeling of it being … right

The smell of Grey
And the wings that hold you close
On this very lonely day
When I’m down and feeling morose

For this I stay alive
During this very lonely day
On this I long to thrive
The wildness of the smell of Grey

We are but their keepers

Caged and restrained, hobbled and curtailed,

Caged and restrained, hobbled and curtailed,
That is what it’s like to be of the living dead.
Longing not for freedom but for life to no avail,
And that is the future for them that I dread.

They are naught like others you and I know
They are another breed apart,
A new species if you will, and so
Will not only steal but rather break your heart.

What must it be like to sit all day and stare
At the far off places just beyond their reach,
And not be embraced by sorrow and despair.
So we hear the anguished voices as they beseech

Not only us, but the fates that placed them here,
To beg of them that it will end
To give them peace and remove the fear,
That no new souls will us the humans send.

For it is their dream that perhaps one day
Our appreciation of them will only get deeper
When we will never again have to say,
We are but their keepers.
