Parakeets and Cockatiels

Greetings to all!

I am interested in owning a Cockatiel. I already have 3 Budgies/ parakeets. The question I have: Is it possible to have a Cockatiel and 3 Parakeets share the same large cage? I would like to get a young weaned hand fed lutino male cockatiel. Bond with the Tiel, slowly introduce the Tiel to the Parakeets then get rid of the 2nd cage. My wife would like just one cage in the house. If I can not get all of them to coexsist in one cage, I just might be force to get rid of the wife and have 2 cages in the house!

Your thoughts and advice are welcomed!

Orettes

Greetings and Merry Christmas to all !

The cage is 18 inches deep by 22 inches wide by 30 inches tall- I think. I am at work so I can not measure. I feel that there is plenty of room. Most of the day the top is open and the Parakeets are hanging around the top. I have a play gym attached to the side so the can go play. If they flutter to the ground(wings clipped),I have a 3 foot ladder that thay can climb back up to the cage- It is on a stand. The Parakeets have good dispositions. They generaly will climb on to a finger at the end of their day. I put a cover over them by 9pm and remove it some time around 7:00 to 7:30. I have 1 Male- and 2 females.

Thanks for the replies!

I answered this in the tiel section though I will add on to it....

It IS possible for budgies and cockatiels to live together without any problems, but the cage must be big enough. I have a cage that is 20"w x 56"h and is currently housing 4 budgies. Because of the way the cage was designed, it's really only fit for a max of two small birds and up to 1 bigger bird such as a tiel... the sad thing was, I received 4 tiels in this cage. Because of the size of the cage the birds do bicker quite a bit, which was a plus because I want one of them (an old hermit, he's about 10-11 yrs old now) to move around more.

As for this cage that you are describing, it sounds to be too small to fit a tiel in there comfortably as well. The budgies may not care for a 'big bird' taking up all their room so it's probably not a good idea in this case.

Thanks for your candid insight to my post. I placed it in both of the spieces boards to ensure that both catagories have a shot at answering my plight.
Well, if I decide on the Tiel, then I will have him in his own cage. Then I would have to look for a dual/double cage. Any suggestions on types of dual/double cages? I might have to build one myself.

Thanks

It is possible as long as the cage is big enought and your keets aren't that aggressive. Some people say keets can be mean and hurt a tiel. My keets don't share a cage with my tiels but they do meet on one of their cages every now and then and they all get along fine.

In the nestbox: 3 pair of keets working the box. In the Incubator: 4 dozen duck eggs and some chicken eggs. In the brooder: XL cochins. Will be breeding bourks once I get boxes and I breed keets now, tiels have boxes, but males have no intrest in female and females have no intrest in males.
