My budgie was covered in brown/red discharge - needed vet & medicine

My budgie was covered in a brown/ red white slimy discharge. We took Philomena to the vet, and the doctor said she had a sinus infection.

Philomena weighs 52grams, and is 2.5 years old. She is EXTREMELY tame, and nibbled the stethoscope while the vet was measuring her heart-beat. The vet said Philomena was a pleasure to examine, and he even cuddled her in his arms for a bit, talking to her about what he was doing ! The vet, Dr. Carnagy, instructed me to give her antibiotics for 10 days. And told me she was not contagious, and could continue to share her enclosure with her best friend, Saul. I have 11 budgies in total, and none of them had any of the symptoms that poor Philomean has.

It's been a few days since we were at the vet, and Philomena is looking much better. The doctor said she should make a full recovery.

I would love to hear other people's stories about their budgies with sinus infections. Did they recover ? What was the reason for the infection in the first place ? My vet said it was nothing I did, but I want to learn all I can so my little girl never has to endure this again !

Thank-you,
Laura & budgies

Budgies get sinus infections at the drop of a hat.

It could be that he took a bath in water that had a little poop in it or something like that.

I have never had one die from a sinus infection and they have always recovered in a week or so.

Just keep everything clean and you should have no more problems.

John

we add one or two drops of the unfiltered apple cider vinegar to all our birds water bowls every day. Doing so helps keep the bacteria at bay.
