What do you do, with a budgie in the room?

Woohoo more questions

So what do you do with your budgie(s) durring playtime regularly, and other times?

I have heard it said again and again that new owners think they can "play" with their new friends in 'strange' ways...so I shall ask you all (my experts ^..^ lol) "What do you do with a budgie in the room?"

I keep pretending I am making headway in training them to perch on my finger by offerring them millet spray which they can't resist and so always climb on my hand whenever I hold some out to them...other than that, mine are still too shy to come out with me.

My budgies aren't tame, but I keep them in a relatively small cage (for their huge 'bubbles'! The cage though is about 20" x 20" x 56"), and in the morning before I feed everyone, I open the door... Cosmo, then Smurf, then Georgia fly out. They fly about the room, try scavanging the floor for bits of loose seeds, and such. On the rare occasion Sophia will fly out as well. After feeding them, I get them back in by getting Cosmo first (he's the oldest around 10 or 11 years old now and easiest to catch), then it's just a matter of "herding" the rest into the cage! They enjoy it!

'bubbles' is definitly right! I found he deals with me best when I am about 10ft away! He will perch on my finger but not by command I have to put it up against his chest, and not always will he feel in the mood to do so.

The way I 'play' with mine is if hes perched on the towel rack when im in the shower or when I feed him by hand in the morning. I was curious of any activities you might enjoy with your wonderful companions. He is always such a good wake-up companion, and I always bring him up to his favorite perch at night (sorta a signal of peace I guess).

Since I posted this earlier, he did something that impressed me: he was able to throw a peice of broccoli about half his size out of the cage. How amazing these creatures are!

Usually we just open the cage, then they sort of tornado out, lands on the lamp in the corner, throws a spaz, then flies around for a while.

Playtime usually consists of training finger-perching, running around on our shoulders and arm-rest of our couch, plus mangling our drapes...

After that we let them relax on the lamp. It's nice and toasty on the top, so they enjoy sitting there for a while until they start to poof up and fall asleep, that's when we take 'em back to the cage, and they usually go in without a fuzz :)

When I take Jerry out every night this is usually what we do:

First I put his play gym and a few other toys in the room where I take him out, lately it has been my bedroom, so I put a bunch of things on the bed. I bring his cage in the room and close the door to close off the room from the other beasts of the house. I tell him to step up and he always does, he never flies out of his cage on his own, he somehow knows it's polite for me to ask him out

Once he is on my finger the first thing he usually does is run up my arm and sit on my shoulder. I let him sit there for awhile as I walk around or sit and watch TV. He likes to sit on my shoulder and preen my hair.

He also likes to sit on his gym, sometimes I put him on it, sometimes he runs back down my arm and hops on one of the perches. When he is on there I usually get him interested in the toys on the gym or in the other toys that I brought out. He has little plastic balls with bells in them (looks like a cat toy) that I hold out to him in my flat hand and he picks it up and shakes it and throws it around, he also does this with a small plastic toy that looks like a molecular model (sorry I'm a science geek). He also has a "birdie brush" that is a piece of soft rope with a knot in one and long frayed ends - I prop this up on his gym and he'll sit and preen that for awhile.

He is usually either on his gym or on my hand or shoulder. Sometimes he will get really excited and fly up to the top of the blinds and sit there for awhile.

When playtime is over I take him over to his cage and he happily hops back in his cage.

My Budgie Entertains Himself

My budgie Abbey is so tame and active that I just need to assist in his play time.

If I am home he is out of his cage. He does many things during his playtime.

1. Play chase the marble.....I will put his marble on the floor and he will peck at it then chase it. He pecks and runs, pecks and runs.

2. Tries to find the kitty, by flying around the house, then finds me and says " Your KItty is sleeping.

3. Land on the coffee table where I have a tiny crystal aminal figurine on a tiny mirror. Pecks the figurine off and then talks and plays with the mirror.

4. Land on the clock on the wall and watch the second hand go round.
When it gets to where he is sitting he tries to peck at it, then it all starts over again.

5. Watch Television and land in the popcorn bowl and break up popcorn.

Likes to join in on whatever we are doing.
Last night it was hillarious. I started doing a jigsaw puzzle, he landed on my head, hung off my bangs and just watched me look for pieces and put them together,. I explained to him what I was doing and how you have to get pieces. Next thing I know, Abbey is in the box with all the pieces pecking at them.,

My bird is very active and tame and seems to entertain himself. When bored he will land on my head and I will do some more talk training or find new ways to stimulate him.

We let Buster out in the mornings before work and in the evenings after work. He loves playing on his playgym and playing with his toys. He has 4 little plastic balls (2 hanging from his playgym with a bell) and 2 on the ground. I am convinced this bird wants to be a basketball star...he bounces the balls around the room and flings them in the air! So adorable!!!!

We can't play with him because he is very aggressive, lunges, and bites. We are working on that with him though. :)
