Urgent! Budgie with nose discharge

Here is a photo of friend's budgie. What is wrong with him? How to help him? They live in a small city with no avian vet. Bird is 9 years old.

This is how he looks when healthy:

thank you

Hi,

The nasal discharge could be an allergy or the start of a respiratory infection. Sorry you don't have a vet close to you. Do you have access to apple cider vinegar or GSE? A couple of drops of one or the other in the birds water may help clear the discharge. If used the bird has to be monitored to make sure it is drinking. The bird needs to be kept warm, 85-87 degrees to help fight of any infection rather than spend it's energy trying to keep warm. Hydration is very important with a sick bird, a little pedalyte or gatorade mixed 50/50 with water may help with hydration.

Birds can go down hill quickly if they get sick, they also hide sickness very well. If the bird starts to fluff up, go to the bottom of the cage, stop eating or drinking, it needs to go to a vet for medication, more than likely an antibiotic. Lets hope it does not get to that point. Should the bird need antibiotics and a regular vet does not know formulary, check back in and we can help.

A couple of tips, smell the birds breath, check and make sure poop is normal, watch for normal eating and drinking. Have your friend tell us if there are any changes. Is the discharge clear or milky?

Keep us posted!

i dont know much about treating sick birds, but something is definantly wrong. i would follow Winged_Victory's advice, while searching for an avian vet in one of your surrounding towns

Just saw your pictures.

The acculated nasal discharge is probably caused by a bacterial or fungal infection. Your friends bird should be seen by an avain vet for treatment. The condition will only get worse without an antibiotic. GSE is a mild antibiotic but may not act in time to help the bird. Have the owner take the bird into a hot steamy shower or bathroom that is warm and steamed up. The heat and moisture may help loosen the dried discharge, do this several times a day. Keep the bird warm while it dries!

An all animal vet should be able to help with medications............

There are several members that raise these birds and may be able to help when they read your posts.
